My puppy is 11 weeks old and her nails are insanely long! Whenever she jumps up on me to play, she leaves long, painful scratches all over me from her nails. Can I clip them myself? If so, how?

Yes. You can use the same toe nail clippers you use on yourself. Just be conservative when you trim, so that you don't nip the quick. If you do, you can pack the nail with cornstarch, and it will stop the bleeding and prevent infection. When the puppy gets bigger, you'll need to change to canine nail trimmers, which you can also use now if you like. We use both depending on the thickness of the nails.

Yes you can if you have the dog nail clipper (the dog kind not the human kind) the dog nail clipper can be found in common pet shop. and for how to do it is not only up to you it's up to the dog as well some dog are not comfortable with nail clipping if your dog are not comfortable with you handling it's paw you should try to get it to use to your hand touching it's paw then CAREFULLY start clipping... In a dog nail have a "quick" that supply blood to the nail be sure to cut only a bit at a time an becarful not to cut the quick if you accidentally cut the quick (It will be very painful for the dog) hold the dog still then apply the Styptic powder to the bleeding nail you may need to have a cotton swabs to use to apply the powder and a damp cloth may be needed to clean up the mess and remember if you cut the quick dog will remember the painful experience of nail clipping and may never let you touch it's paw again so be careful !

And if you think you are not ready to clip your dog nail consider a Vet or a Groomer to do it (It's safer to get a experience person to do it)

Hope this helps!!

Yes, you can cliip your puppies nails yourself. Get some sharp puppy nail clippers. You can get a set at gwlittle.com. When you clip their nails, only clip up to where the nail starts to curve upward, no further. Jeffers.com sells this liquid where if you accidentally cut the nail too far, you put it on the tip of the nail to stop the bleeding, and ease the pain. By the way, if you have heard that dogs can die from cutting their nails to far back, it is false. They can't bleed to death from that! Good Luck with your new puppy! Take lots of pictures, they grow up SO fast!

Like everyone is telling you, you can cut your puppy's nails.
Filing is a good way to stop them from scratching so much.
But if you feel he/she needs them clipped, shine a light on their paw to see through, where the 'quick' is. That will ensure you don't cut them too short. Make sure your puppy is calm when you do this, because a first nail clipping can really stress the poor dog out! Cover his/her eyes and hold them gently around the tummy like you are hugging them sideways, and then hold each paw in your hand while you cut. Make sure you comfort the puppy and tell them its okay.
When your done, give the puppy a treat, and let them run around to try the new nails out.

Remember, have someone help you, that way you can show your puppy that you are the one to trust.

Have fun!

I clip my dogs' all the time. Go to a store and buy the clippers. Then you just cut them. Be careful not to cut their quick. If you do it'll be okay they may yelp but it will be fine. It will bleed a lot so don't panic. Just take small snips at a time it'll save you a lot of money from taking them to the vet in the long run. Also if you start now by the time it is grown it will be used to it and it'll be sooo easy. For now you might need someone to help you hold them down. Also remember peanut butter is great for distracting dogs.♥ Good Luck♥

Yes, get dog nail clippers, be very careful as the inside of a dogs nails have what is called a quick and will bleed if cut to short... Trim small amounts of nail away at a time, note your pup may not react well so only trim as many nails at a time as your pup will let you,(it may be easier to have someone else hold the Pup)
.... Or when you take the pup to the vet for regular shots etc.. the will trim them for a small fee usually 5- 10 more

Yes you can, you can go to any Pet store and get some nail clippers for dogs and it will have the instructions on there. Also try to keep the clippers away from the nail bed cause that could hurt the pup, I hope this helps you out.

You can clip them yourself with a pair of cutters at the pet store, but you must be careful not to cut too close to the paw. If you cut too close, the dog will start bleeding in the paw, and nails may not grow back. If you think you might not be able to do it, go to the grooming buisness. They can di it for little or no charge, and it takes less than 5 min.
Good luck!

Yes, you can, as a matter of fact it's better if you get the little puch use to the fact of getting groom by you. Just buy a special nail clipper for dogs available at any Pet Shop. TRYING TO CLIP THEM WITH REGULAR CLIPS FOR HUMAN USE WILL BE HARMFUL.

If the dog has black nails I wouldn't . It's to hard to see here the nail ends . If there white then you can see it . But if you have never cut dog's nails before take your dog to the Vet. it's only about 5.00 to get it done . Don't cut it to short or the dog will freak out every time. If you cut to short it can bleed to death
