Why not simply ask him? Guys are more direct than girls. You probably think that because you like surprises, he will too. That's not always the case. Guys often get excited in anticipation of what they know you're going to be doing together - it works for me anyway!!
Basically you don't have to try so hard. I don't know what you're worried about, but if your 'life' is good anyway, just be yourself. You obviously like one another anyway. Just enjoy what you have together!
