The amount of water that a paper towel can absorb depends on the amount of fiber in a sheet including the number of plies. Also the size of sheets may vary brand to brand. Even the size and types of fibers can affect their ability to wet and expand to hold water. Obviously, wax coated fibers would hold very little water.

It doesn't really. That is just advertising hype. Many factors can effect how much could be absorbed, but the brand name is not one of those factors.
