not allowing for any in flight delays it should take about 7 hours 30 minutes but with the time difference of 5 hours you 'get there in two and a half' but flight time is 7 and a half hours

I assume you mean flight duration?
It is usually about 6.5 hours going to New York and 5.5 coming back. Depends on weather conditions. The difference is because of prevailing winds.

Well realistically with layovers etc it's about 10 hours. 6 hours if you are lucky. Look it up on expedia.
