Gustav Klimt was the big German painter of that era.

During the first years of the 20th century there was two groups of german painters :"Die Bruckë" and "Der Blaue Reiter", both examples of an important art movement known as "German Expressionism".
Try to search between them your painter.
Gustave Klimt was borned in Vienna 1862, he wasn´t german.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, lived in Berlin around 1920, well known expressionist, ....maybe this is the one ???????????
One of his paintings was recently auctioned for many millions..(Berlin street scene)
