It's probably a combination of bad hair dye and not using the right products to care for it. First of all, permanent hair dye brands aren't created equal. Colorsilk (I forget the brand) and Preference (either by loreal or clairol) often times don't even take to a person's hair, or fade very quickly. Garnier 100% color is really good, along with the Garnier Fructis haircolor. I have read that Clairol Herbal Essences Haircolor is supposed to be good as well. Another thing I might mention is that brown shades that are warm tend to fade to a reddish toned brown. If you have any red in your hair naturally as well the chances are that a bit of that red will show through the dye very quickly, no matter what dye you use. For example, if someone with reddish hair dyed it medium brown, they would get a red-tinged medium brown shade that almost looked auburn. Also, whenever you dye your hair you need to use a shampoo and conditioner specifically for colored hair. There are even some shampoos made for specific hair colors (brunette, red, blonde, black, etc.) that contain a bit of a tint in the appropriate color that can help revitalize haircolor that has faded a little bit. Some companies also make products for stying hair that help to prevent the dye from fading due to sun exposure, heat styling, etc. Hope that helps!

well i did the same i went for a light brown when i was a bleach blonde. i dies my hair about a couple months ago but the color went back within a few DAYS!!! but the reason it does this is because your hair was so light before that the original hair color doesnt want to accept the darker one. try dying a few shades darker than you want it to be so that when it fades next time it wount fade as much and go back to the original. also try a new shampoo and conditioner. some of the brands just strip your hair out of color and moisture! hope this helps!

I had the same problem. My hair is naturally light brown, but ever since I was like 8 I've been using Sun-In on my hair to make it lighter. Well that has totoally damaged my hair and I was wanting to dye it back brown till the other grew out. My problem was that my hair was so fine that the color wasn't grabbing it also my shampoo was stripping the color. Of course being out in the sun all the time doesn't help either.

Maybe you dont use color treated shampoo. Color will fade when its not treated properly. Bain de Terre Kiwi is good shampoo. The sun will also fade the color. It might also depend on what color you use. Box color doesnt always work so well. If you dont want to go to a salon, find a beauty supply store like Sallys and buy color, a bowl, gloves, and perioxde.

first you need to know the rules of hair dyeing in case you don't it is always better to deep condition your hair a day before dyeing and then don't wash it and color when it is dirty the color will take better.
Red hair and red tints will always fade fastest its just the way it is to help prevent fading don't take extremely hot showers try washing your hair in warm water only and then when your done turning on the cold water to make sure the cuticle is closed also make sure to use a color treated hair shampoo and conditioner and don't expose your hair to to much sun or wind it's opens the cuticle and allows for fading

Pre-cleanse your hair with Ion (can be found in your local Sally's store). This will help to strip away anything that could be blocking the color from bonding to your hair shaft. Also, your water has a lot to do with color fading. If you don't have a water softener, try to get one. If you have hard water, it will have an impact on how well your color stays.

It probably is not fading, it just seems like it because you get used to it. Or, maybe your roots are just growing out really fast. Another option is that there may be a possiblility of accidentally buying non-perminent dye.
