Wait until you've taken it for two weeks before you try to stop smoking. It has to build up in your system. It's the same drug as Zyban (just a different brand name) that doctors prescribe to help people stop smoking. It probably says that on the package so your doctor can alert you that it can help you quit smoking. I used it and it made a HUGE difference. Normally if I would quit cold turkey I would have severe withdrawal symptoms and be miserable for several days. On the Zyban (Wellbutrin) after taking it for about a week the cigarettes started tasting really weird and gross. I set my quit date for two weeks after I started taking it. The first day without cigarettes I had only mild withdrawal symptoms. The second day, nothing. It was amazing.

The package says that because if you're taking Wellbutrin SR for depression, you DON'T want to take Zyban for smoking. (They're the same drug and taking both would overdose you-- possible seizures)
So, you CAN smoke on Wellbutrin. You may just find that you don't want to as much.
Quitting smoking is THE toughest thing to do. I smoked for about 30 years. It's really all psychological. And I have no doubt that when you've decided you've had enough, you won't smoke anymore.
On a personal note, I could never tell myself that I would NEVER smoke again-- I told myself that not smoking was a decision I was making right now and that if I decided i HAD to have a cigarette, then I could have one anytime I wanted to. I've been tempted, but it's been about six years and I haven't done it.
Good luck to you. You WILL do it. :)

I found only two statements in the Wellbutrin warning statement that discusses smoking:
1)Some patients get high blood pressure, sometimes severe, while taking wellbutrin xl. The chance of high blood pressure may be increased if you also use nicotine replacement thereapy (for example, a nicotene patch) to help you stop smoking.
2)Do not take Wellbutrin XL if you are taking ZYBAN (used to help people stop smoking) or any other medicines that contain bupropion hydrochloride, such as Wellbutrin tablets or Wellbutrin sustained release tablts.
If you have questions, you have to ask your doctor. Be suspicious of answers for this question if credible sources are not documented.

This doctor told me that when Wellbutrin SR came out on the market they found out it helped patients stop smoking. So what they did in order to use it as a medication to help you stop smoking they put Wellbutrin SR under the Zyban label. It really works,Wellbutrin will stop the craving for nicotine.Give it a couple of weeks.

No, you can still smoke while on it. I have for years (I'm a very light smoker...if that has any relevance.) But it's nice that it can help you to quit. It isn't like that stuff (antabuse, i think) that people take to stop drinking where if they have a drink they get violently sick.
Good luck with the quitting. Although obviously that is the most healthy thing to do, trying to do it when you are in the midst of a depression and just starting treatment is not the ideal time to quit. You are much more likely to succeed if you quit when you are feeling a bit better.

If you are prescribed Wellbutrin or Zyban it is essential that you tell your doctor about any other medications that you are taking as there are a number of other drugs and substances that can interact with Bupropion and this includes prescription drugs, herbal remedies, vitamins and over the counter preparations like cough medicines etc.

You should also inform your doctor if you are currently pregnant or are trying to conceive or if you are breastfeeding or if you are due to undergo surgery or any other treatment in the near future.
Some side effects are more common than others and there are some that are more serious than others. Side effects associated with Bupropion can include: Dry mouth, Changes in taste, Insomnia, Headache, Constipation, Nausea, Tremor, Agitation,Dizziness, Increased sweating, Weight loss, Mania, hallucinations, Seizures, Irritability, Depression, Anxiety, Irregular heartbeat or palpitations, Chest pain, Abdominal pain, Rash and eczema, hives, Raised blood pressure, Difficulty breathing or wheezing, Confusion, Blurred vision, Fatigue, Loss of interest in sex, Swelling of face, tongue and throat
