Good nose, hunts well, healthy, but if you aren't right on top of him he buries the bird so quick you can't find a sign of it. If you do find it, he hasn't harmed it at all, it's just a little dirty. It's my father-in -law's dog, and he is working with it and says it is starting to improve. Buried 3 last week but actually retrieved one. I know he only uses positive reinforcement training and I understand why, any thing negative could discourage the dog from hunting at all. This is the second season hunting for this dog.
Any hints or similar experiences would be interesting. Thank you.

He takes this seriously and I know that it is, especially for an 80 yearold man. But every time I get a hunting report, it's all I can do to keep a straight face. Maybe that should be my real Q. Why is it so hard not to burst out laughing? Should I laugh? Are the reports meant to be funny?

I don't know about your father-in-law, maybe he is wondering if you find his dog funny. I know your report makes me laugh.

Does the dog get bones? does it bury them or other toys? Cabelas has training gear that may help, including some that are scented and have a realistic feel.
