I got pregnant six months after the birth of my first baby, and everything went perfectly (thank GOD)..
A friend of mine got pregnant three months after the birth of her first baby, but she felt realllly worn out (and continues to - not just because of the child care, but she felt totally unprepared and that her body had not recovered before she was pregnant again)..
Research now tells us that 18 months is the optimal amount of time to wait between pregnancies, and I have to say, I agree with that - - if I had had the choice, I'd have done exactly that.
The body needs time to recover (fully) from the first pregnancy (for hormones to get back to normal, and the vitamins/minerals to get back to balanced levels) before the stress and strain of another pregnancy. Pregnancy makes the body work hard!
Having said all that, it has been done before, and as long as the mother is young (under 35), relatively healthy, and had a healthy first pregnancy and birth, the second would not be considered a high-risk pregnancy.
Best of luck with all! :)

A friend of mine had their first child 9 months to the day after they got married, and their second child 10 1/2 months after the first. My own first and second children are 14 months apart. It shouldn't be a problem. You body can probably handle the pregnancy without a problem. The problem will be the two toddlers running around at the same time.

It is not necessarily unsafe to get pregnant so quickly after giving birth, it just depends on you and how your body copes. A friend of mine got pregnant 3 months after giving birth, so her sons are exactly one year apart. She was perfectly fine...tired, of course, because she had a newborn and a 1-year-old, but other than that, she was fine. It depends on how you think your body will react, how you will be able to deal with the situation, etc. Besides that, just because you TRY to get pregnant 4 1/2 months after giving birth, doesn't mean it will happen. It may take a few months or even longer.

I sure hope it's o.k. My baby's 6 months old and I'm 3 months pregnant. I have been feeling great but my last pregnancy I was borderline gestational diabetes/pre-eclampsia. Don't see the dr. until 1/9/07 so I'm expecting him to freak out that I'm pregnant so soon.
I agree with everyone else....waiting until my body healed a little more (especially b/c I had a c-section and this one will too) would have been a WHOLE LOT SMARTER. Oh well. LOL

Doctors suggest that you wait at least 12 mos before starting to try again. Having pregnancies too close together can increase your risk of PTL and a preterm birth. It's hard on your body. Your body needs time to recover from having the last baby. And pregnacies close together can also jeopardize the breastfeeding relationship of the older child since pregnancy usually diminishes milk supply.

I think its out good because its takes the body a year to heal from each pregnancy so slow it down and let the other child get older if you are thinking about having another one.

I became pg w/ my second daughter approx. 6 mos. after my first daughter, and everything came out okay. But I think dr.s think you should wait about 12 mos for your body to rebuild all the nutrients, etc. so you can provide for another child. Also, to give yourself time to heal.
