They are littermates, live strictly indoors, are very well-adjusted. We use the same litter that we have for the past five years (this has only happened in the last six months). They also have received a clean bill of health from the vet. We have two litterboxes (one that self-cleans, and the other we have to clean which we do twice a day). They use the self-cleaning one the most, when they don't mess outside of the boxes. We're pondering getting an additional self-cleaning box in addition to the one we already have. Does this sound like it would take care of the problem? Their boxes are in a quiet extra bedroom in the house where they are not disturbed, so noise/distractions do not seem to be an issue there. Territorial, maybe?

Sometimes, you need to have boxes in different areas of the house. If they are messing just on the outside of the boxes (in the same general area of the boxes themselves), that usually indicates they are no longer happy with the location of the boxes. Even after 5 years, this can be a fairly common occurance.
Also, depending on the size of the cats themselves, if the one they seem to miss more often is smaller than the automatic one, it's possible they are no longer comfortable using it due to size. Try a different size, or even another automatic one.........there's never any harm in trying, and if that solves your problem, GREAT!!
If this continues, you can find POTTY STOP deodorizers at many of the commercial websites for pets (Drs. Foster and Smith has one that is excellent). This is applied to the areas outside of the boxes, and tends to prevent them from "evacuating" outside of the box.

It can be a sign of worms but you said they received a clean bill of health. I have a cat that he will only go in a clean box so I too have a self cleaning box. I have another cat that she is actually allergic to certain types of litter, companies do change formulas and animal like humans can develop allergies as well. You may want to try changing litter brands first as well as some cats are finicky about the consistency of the litter too. I do suggest a dust free litter and not the sand kind of litter these 2 things can cause severe urinary track infections in the cats.

I have two cats and my sister cleans the one litter box every couple of days. Honestly- I can tell you from personal experience that one litter box is better than fine. You had a good idea with the less space taken up, less mess to clean up. Stepping on cat litter sucks XD And it means less rooms smell like kitty litter.

Messing? As in kicking litter outside the box? If so, this isnt a real problem. My cat does it all the time. Just whenever you clean the litterbox have one of those mini broom and pan beside it so you can clean up the exess litter and just dump it in the bag.
Good Luck. God Bless you and your cats.

Have you changed the type of litter you use? Have you added any new pets or people to the household?
Often pets become uncomfortable with a covered litter box. Try taking the lid off the one you clean or replace it with just an open litter pan.
These are the things we most often recommend to clients

Omigod! I totally feel for you. My cat keeps peeing all over my house and it smells SO bad! One reason why they do that sometimes is a urine track infection or something like that. I would suggest taking it to a vet and see what they think you should do. Good luck! I know how you feel, just recently my cat peed on my bed sheets. Ewwww, you do NOT want to find that out in the middle of the night!

Sounds territorial to me, are they missing or just going nowhere near the other box?....have they been spayed and or neutered?...I would have that done if they have not been, they may be spraying....they may object to the sharing aspect of the deal...cats are funny little animals.
Have they been into the catnip lately?....I know my cat got some for christmas and she has been acting crazy!!!!! Really crazy...hope it helps...
