The best childrens` shoes are possibly `lace-ups`, because this pulls the shoe completely over the foot all the way around. The foot needs to be supported evenly, not just to one side or the other. They should also support the arch of the foot, this means having a tiny heel, even a couple of centimetres will do. A child's shoe should not have a totally flat sole, and should not be made of flimsy material which will not support.. Most important of all, the shoe should fit properly. ALWAYS have childrens` feet measured when buying shoes. The shoes need not be expensive if they conform to the points above.Of course a shoe that is manufactured `down` to a price will never be the same as one manufactured `up` to a price. As to manufacturers, Clarkes of course are one of the best known `quality` makes and another on sale in the UK is Start-Rite a very old established company. There are also many other brands which may suit your child.

For young kids, go with cheap shoes. Until they hit the 4-5 year old mark their feet grow too fast to actually wear out a pair of shoes. Spending $40 on a pair of shoes that'll last two months is kind of ridiculous. Instead use the Wal-Mart or Target brand.

In the Us I would definitely recommend Striderite. Expensive, but worth it. My son has severe flat feet and he has to have comfortable shoes. By comfortable I don't just mean shoes that fit well. When you buy shoes, you need to make sure that they aren't heavy and they flex so that they they flex with him when he walks. They shouldn't flex in the middle but they should flex at the top part of the foot, between the center of the foot and toes. Because that is the part of your foot that flexes when you walk. If the shoes don't flex and are heavy, he/she is going to have a hard time walking and will be very uncomfortable. If you can find shoes that have a cushion inside the shoe were the foot curves that is also good and comfortable. I heard that Newbalance carries good shoes to. I have to check it out though.

Stride Rite shoes are Awesome. We've had our daughter in them since before she could begin to walk. She's now almost 3 and is still wearing them. We can normally find them in the major department stores but sometimes we find them on sale at the Stride Rite Store. They are truely the best shoes plus they come in wide widths which are sometimes hard to find.

In the US...Stride Rite shoes are above and beyond the best. They have prewalking (geared towards cruising babies) up to big kids shoes. The walking shoes have EXCELLENT ankle support which as any parent will know is key to them learning to walk properly.

I always go to Clarks or use Start Rite shoes for my kids. Have occasionally swayed to cheaper brands and they have not lasted as long or have given my kids blisters. I have a 2 year old and a 5 year old.

I have found clarks to be the best for my child but I think it varies. Clarks have always been very helpful and the shoes are good quality.

Id recommend "clarks" if ur living in uk.not sure if u can get them in the states, some middle eastern countries have the "clarks" store.
they will measure ur child food using a proper footmachine and get the width and depth of the instep and then hunt for all the shoes in that size ur child needs.

Stride Rite is absolutely wonderful, they do a thorough measurement of the child's feet to unsure the best fit and they have a wide variety of styles. They are a bit pricey though.
