You are in the wrong place, this is Australia and New Zealand, and we are quite a bit further south than Southern California......

Expensive in most good places...can run 1500us to 3500us depending where and what you are looking for.
Most good places have yealy leases.

Getting your own place will be $$$. Look for flatmates (roommates) on craigslist.org under ROOMS / SHARED in housing. Good luck.
