There are differences in parts of the brain in people with bipolar than those without. There are genetic links to this illness. It is highs and lows, but it is much more than just that. It used to be called Manic Depressive Disorder, which I think is a more descriptive title. It is a mood disorder which can be treated but not cured. It effects and distorts thoughts and feelings. It greatly effects behavior. It can cause irritability and aggression. The results of untreated bipolar can be devastating. It tends to effect those close to the person very deeply and therefor has significant impact on all sorts of relationships. Untreated there is up to a 20% risk of fatality through suicide or reckless, impulsive behaviors.

bipolar is a mood disorder and a peronality disorder, think of it as altered moods and peronality eg;
your talking to someone and and they seem find perfectly normal then out of the blue they become angery and upset and totally change their tone and become nasty. its like one minute they are your friend then the next they are telling you how much they hate you and to get away from them.
is really complicated because they can just cry out of no where and then smlie 2 seconds latr.
my boss had bipolar and man was she crazy., she would tell you your doin a good job then yell at you for doin it wrong right after shes watching you and commenting you then BAM she freaks.and just walks away.

It's exactly what the word says it is. Someone who's emotions go from one "pole" to the other. One minute WAY too happy (manic), the next, horribly depressed. And it just goes back and forth from one extreme to the other. That's is why you need to be on medications to even out the mood swings so they are much less intense.

I think bipolar is when someone has really high highs and really low lows and goes from one to the other in a mater of a few seconds. It is hard for them to find a happy medium and be there consistently.

I think it means that you go from one extreme to another for no reason. Liek you will be super happy, full of confidence and happy with your life & then switch & be super sad and depressed, angry and frustrated! Itsucks I think its a chemical imbalance in your brain!~

I think it is when a person suffers extreme variations in behavior and has rapid cycling of bouts of depression with periods of euphoria and feelings of grandeur.

Mood swings that run from extreme to extreme(pole to pole). Very excited(maniacal) or really sad(severely depressed).
