They spend 5 hours a day doing all their maths homework three times over or their parents will beat them, whereas I just play computer games. Seriously though, the Chinese parents in Western society will probably value knowledge and work more than many Westerners because they know the value that it has in this modern age of information and science. Maths is also the key subject to understanding everything. The Chinese parents will teach their children from a very early age the values of hard work and learning, whereas (most) Western parents are greedy fuckers who don't give a **** about their children and will not teach them to have any discipline or respect for others or themselves.
There may also be an aspect of competitiveness or wanting to prove themselves to be superior because they were looked down upon in history by the Western culture. They were referred to as the "weak men of Asia" or something in the past and I think that this has pushed them to strive to become superior.
It is all to do with how much work they put in, and I believe that anyone with average intelligence has the potential to achieve great things if they are willing to put in the effort.

local students? local to where exactly? I think the chinese are more driven to deal well whereas western students are used to getting something for nothing or not a lot of effort.
Hard work is an alien concept to most british kids these days - its all about rights - its all I have the right to do this, have that, be this..... and also they aspire to be on Big Brother or be a pop star!

I know what you mean. We Chinese value maths and sciences greatly, I had to get four A's out of five subjects in 5th year(I live in UK)for my parents to be happy(English was the letdown, B). Basically it's our culture and upbringing where we're brought up to strive for perfection especially in maths. Most Chinese people I know study Law or Engineering, I'm a bit different and went on to do Pharmacy. Nice to know there are teachers who're curious about this.

they are better motivated-its in their culture to work hard to achieve things-us 'locals' are less bothered by failing-noone wants to fail but we understand there are always different things to do-it wont bring shame on our family either if we fail a maths exam.

chinese students are probably more serious in their studies than western ones, this and the fact that they memorise better and the fact that they are not as lazy as their american counterparts probably makes them do better in school, especially math.
