The best place to purchase a birthday cake on a budget for a reasonable cost. Is Sam if there is one near you. You get more for your money and you can have the kid(s) picture on the cake or a theme cake. But if the kid is turning 1 years old you can purchase a cake a get a small cake for free. Sam's is the better choice to me.
What's the best foods to make/ buy? I would say stick to kiddy finger foods. Most kids don't sit too long at parties they are excited with the activities and the company of other kids. Try foods like hot dogs, wings, chicken legs, pizza, chips, fruit. Or you can consider making the birthday person's favorites. You can look on www.kidsparties.com for helpful tips and ideas.

Sanwiches cut with biscuit cutters, or rolled up and cut are fun- do a different shape for each flavour so it is clear. Beware of nuts in case there are allergies. Veggie sticks, and houmous is good. bread sticks and cheese crackers. mini pizzas- depending on what you are doing if you choose pizzas you can get decorating it to be part of the fun- provide individual bases and pots of cheese, veggies, tuna etc and they can decorate- a prize for the most unique! cheese and pineapple on sticks for a retro vibe! grapes, cerries and otehr berries are always popular if you want to provide a some healthy sweet options. Do be prepared though for it to be only the biscuits and cakes that get eaten! Have fun! Any old supermarket will do a cake at a reasonable price, but if you really are on a budget it is much cheaper to make your own

Finger foods scaled down to their little fingers...miniature hot dogs in miniature buns, miniature hamburgers in miniature buns (use round cookie or donut cutters to cut the buns....OR take a package of roll or bread dough from the freezer section and shape and bake your own (my kids loved this the best) ---the cheapest cake is a 13 x 9 that you make yourself....have the birthday child help decorate the cake with candies and 'squirt can' icing....really, kids don't have the same value judgement over bakery versus home-made, and if you let them help decorate with the candies and icing, they think this is SO MUCH Better than those perfect looking cakes from the store! Make broccoli baked in cheese sauce (velveeta) - plain potato chips and a simple french onion chip dip and then let them scoop their own ice cream and leave a couple bowls of candy sprinkles, raisins and nuts so they can make their own "creations" ---they will have a healthy eating day and lots of fun!

Chex Mix
Belly Busters (mini burgers)
Potato Skins
Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese
Pizza
Wal*Mart or any good grocery store will have a cake department that is good. If you have a TCBYs or Dairy Queen you can get an ice-cream cake. Cupcakes are also good.

why not get things for them to make their own mini pizzas? all you need is biscuits, cheese, sauce, and toppings. after they have created the perfect pizza you bake them in the oven according to the directions on the biscuit package. i've done this and the kids just love it. the best place for a cake is costco. it's cheap, and the frosting is fluffy, not sugary. plus, you can order it with different fillings like cheesecake. yum, yum!

children usually prefer junk stuff like french fries/ wedges, mini burgers, or mini pizzas.....but the best way to make them eat healthy n nutritous food is to make the food appealing.....i wud prefer to make a chicken patty wit olive eyes n carrot as its legs n cucumber its tail....then sum interesting fillings on cheese cracker, like a pc. of cheese n sum ketchup n parsley, or grated carrot n onion wit a tint of lemon juice n salt. U can also try canapes with scrambled eggs or simply filled wit grated cheese n veggies(like carrot, cauliflower, onion, beet ), or cheese n potatoes.
