Daily I visit a 97 year old resident of a nursing home. The dining room is a dirty white (I guess). There is no color of any kind. What suggestions do you have to make this room more inviting to the residents for increasing their appetite, making it more cheerfull and welcoming? I have not spoken to the director but hope your suggestions will help present a positive approach to changing the appearance of such a dull room.

pale yellow is a great color for a dinning room
i have worked in a nursing home for seven years and that seems to be a popular color it is calming and relaxing especially to Alzheimer's patients bright table cloths and art works wonders
maybe if you went to the director and told them it has been proved to increase food consumption 50 percent dinning in those conditions
you could also go to other nursing homes in your area and ask to see there dinning area, all of them will let you, to get some ideas if the director of the home is refusing to do anything about it the residents have an ombudsman which is someone who fights for their rights and to get them things that will make their stay more enjoyable the number should be hanging in the hallway if not they can provide you with the information to contact them
please do it is depressing to be there and they need something to cheer them up

I love "Luv's" answer. That is an excellent idea. Another idea is to provide them with cheap disposable colorful plastic tablecloths from the dollar store. Or maybe colorful plasic placemats that are easy to wipe off after each use. You can find some inexpensive vases and fill them with silk flowers. Hobby Lobby often has the stems or vases for half price. You could find matching valances for the windows to tie in the flowers.

I like the idea of asking them to let you use volunteers to paint it the best. Especially if you can find an art student who can put in a vibrant and happy mural on one focal point wall.

Also, I have a friend who volunteers by bringing his very calm dog to the nursing home once a week. He just tours the residents and lets them love on him a little bit. It brightens most people's day.

obviously it needs painted. Pale yellow keeps coming to mind for some reason. maybe because framed wooden pictures look good against it, and it is cheerful. so i guess anther obvious, hang a few wood framed ( classy, not tacky) pictures. a nice linen table cloth, and a couple of vases of pretty flowers would be nice too. all these things ( except paint) can be found at flee markets, thrift stores, yard sells, etc.) so it wouldn't cost much. and in the world of assisted living ( to the owners anyway) money is the issue. good luck. hope i helped.

when we were considering an assisted living facility for my aunt, the one we chose we went and had lunch together in the dining facility before we made our choice. it was a pretty shade of dusty rose, with a print wallpaper on the bottom half of the walls. had nice soft lighting, using some hanging lights. greenery, whether nice silk plants, that always look nice and require minimal dusting, or real hardy ivy, that needs attention, but is pretty. wooden framed pictures, of families, children, animals. flower vases on each table, pretty plastic placemats that are easily cleaned are nice too. it is important that these elders know they are loved, and are being provided with care. i love the idea of getting students in to do a mural, and you volunteering your ideas and your work in painting it.
good luck

look for artists ( maybe students) who would volunteer to do some mural work. or hire a muralist. my grandma lives in a home where all 4 walls have a season theme.the residents love it and according to the season at hand....its a great place to take family pictures with them using the mural as a backdrop!

oh that is so sad! I would definitly try to do something! Go with the theme of spring. Springtime brings cheer and happiness and a warm feeling. Soft pastel colors, like pale yellow, baby blue, soft pink, lavender. Decorate with flowers and birds and butterfly ornaments, Bless your heart and best of luck!

I would volunteer to paint it for them. Add some inexpensive art posters(framed) that you can find at thrift and "junk stores".
