usually if it is trained it will let you know. but if it is not you just have to take it outside frequently untill it can learn how to tell you!
having feeding times at the same time dailey helps build patterns. Usually after your puppy eats it will need to have a bowl movement within 30 minutes.you will need to take it out side more often for urination!

Some will scratch at a door or whine at you.. others will magically "disapear" from the room and then you find it a bit later on. If the dog is still young she/he may not know how to tell you yet, so take the pup out at least every 2-3 hours - when she realizes that is where she is going, she will find a way to let you know. =)

Look for it to sniff, sniff, and sniff. Some dogs also walk in circles before going potty, so be alert to that. My Shih-Tzu always gets very hyper when she needs to go out and starts running in circles.

You also may want to take your pup out about 30 minutes after it eats. If you set up a feeding schedule, it will be easy to work this out and make house-training much easier for you and the pup. Just stay outside with it until it pottys and praise a LOT when it goes outside. It will come to associate going potty outside with making you happy!

Good luck and good pick with the Shih-Tzu!
