I know of a load of organisations who have raised a significent amount of money by running racenights. You get a load of people in a room and show videos of races and the people bet on the winner. If you put a bit of work in you could hit your number in one night!

The biggest money spinner in the whole thing is the race card or programme....a good source of info is the site below..

What kind of charity is it? Depending upon the charity- your donations will vary.

Raffles are good. I see by some of the other responses what worked for them. You could combine the "donations"- services like a house cleaning, car washing, etc. with materials donated by local businesses and members.

Car washes and bake sales will raise small amounts, but will advertise your cause. Raffle tickets could be sold there, too.

If you have a "venue" like a building or a parking lot that may be vacant for the weekend, you could sponsor a "flea market" or something like a "block sale." Sell tables for a fee (non refundable) and then the sellers will come. If you want, you could charge admission, too. (Maybe a small fee).

You will need to advertise- to get the word out. If the cause is good, you will get a lot of response.

Good luck.

The best way for us is a rummage sale. Plan at least 6 months in advance start asking for donations, they are will be no cost to you. Get people to loan you part of their garage for storage.
Ask a local fast food place with a large parking lot of it they would let you have it there this puts you in a good visibility and traffic area.
Our kids have had one every year, we only take hard goods.. we don't take any clothing or shoes its just too much of a mess. We cleared $1000.00 on one Saturday for 4 hours. So if you can do a sale for 2 days, for 6 hours you should get your 3000 easily.
Note: For publicity give a promo to the local cable station, radio station and the newspaper but make sure its all non gratius ie. you don't pay for it they usually leave space for non profit and don't ask for fees.

I recently raised just under that with something called auction of promises. Basically, you auction off services [such as babysitting, web design, writing a song, whatever] instead of materials. The main benefits are that the overheads [which are usually massive in conventional auctions, are almost zero, and anyone can contribute any of their skills.
My advise is to get some really big prizes [we had a week's stay in a villa in Turkey, tickets to Strictly Come Dancing Final and other stuff] and some smaller stuff. Also don't do two identical or similar things, and aim for variety!
We were so amazed at the amount of money we raised [£2,643.15!] I just thought I had to write this in.
Good luck with whatever you choose to do!

Word of mouth

Talk to companies

Make sure you have papers stating what the money is for and who gets the money

Write a press release, call a couple news stations and papers and ask if they would be interested in being send the release. Do not just send it to them and hope they will read and run it.

Make a good website, nothing to flashy, simple and easy for people to see. Make sure people can donate the money online via something like paypal or credit card.

Talk to churches and other community groups, colleges to see if they are interesting in sponsoring.

I'd avoid sponsored rides and parachute jumps - most people I know don't sponsor this as they see it as a freebie for someone. I'd suggest a sponsored event which people can see does some good, i.e. a sponsored 'clear up the grass verges' or 'paint an old pereson's kitchen' or 'weed a public area of land'. People will see some value for their money and won't think that you have just got a nice day out on thier money.
Good luck.

Hold a silent auction; a yard sale; car wash; buy some lottery tickets (you decide the value) and sell some tickets for it; hold a penny drive - people donate their change in a jar; sell scratch tickets; bake sale. These are some of the ideas our company uses. Good Luck!

I had a lot of experiences on this, do a sponsored 20 mile bike ride. Hype up the event and get lots of people to sponsor you. Get people from work, friends, family to sponsor you per mile. However, keep to the deal and do the promised deed.

On the day get a few friends to join you.
Sounds fun and good

write to companies for sponsorship. Also do something unique like getting people to sponsor you to run around town wearing just a leaf, or wash peoples cars in a bikini...something silly that will attract peoples attention. Good Luck!
