Ultra Sonics are often used for NDT (Non-Destructive Testing). By sending an Ultra-sonic signal into a metal surface we listen for it to reflect from impurities. This reflected signal or lack of a signal tells us what is going on inside an a/c component.

In relation to aircraft, you may be thinking of hypersonic, which in general can be described as "lickety-split" (I think it's 3X the speed of sound, may be higher. Anyone? I'll search too.
