One way to get a really good value in port is to look for a "Late Bottled Vintage" port which corresponds to a good vintage year. Recent classic vintages include 1997, 2000 and 2003. You would find the "LBV" version from a good producer like Taylor Fladgate or Fonseca for a fifth the price of their actual vintage port from the same year. You could find an LBV for around $20 or less. It will give you an impression of what the true vintage port's style would be like, but at a much more affordable price.
