Sam and Jack - I started out with an Olympus 1.3 megapixel and graduated up to an Olymput 4.4 megapixel. Ended up with my current digital, a Canon SLR - the rebel 350XT. If the prices had been right, I'd have gone with the Canon from the beginning (whatever the model was at the time I was looking). NO WAY should you settle for anything less than an SLR. I feel, now, like I wasted decent money on the earlier point-and-shoots.
I looked at both Nikon and Canon - the Nikon was too big for my hand so that made an easy choice. One fellow at work got an Olympus SLR. You should check them out in person to see how they feel when you carry them. Price and feel are the two biggest issues here.... and THEN get a camera that handles as many pixels as possible.

I usually love Sony products but the cybershots have problems and aren't as good as the traditional camera brands- I too LOVE my Canon Digital Rebel, worth every penny, easy to use, and as an avid and semi-pro photographer, I've taken gorgeous shots without much fuss. If you're not looking for something that "high-end", I'd suggest as well Olympus, also Fuji, Pentax, etc. Look at brands that have a history of making cameras and you should be good. The more mps you have the better the photo quality will be depending on how you set it up of course.

i got a kodak 720 cam, and i'm pretty happy with it. it was about $300, and 12x optical zoom, auto-focus, overall pretty good. a few pix have come out blurry, but i take it at that range you want something of higher quality? hmm...maybe you should look into buying a lens and a camera body (separately) for better quality if you want to spend that much? or maybe you want to stick with the multi-zoom cameras? (if you get a camera with separate lens, you are going to get better optics, and better quality pix). seriously tho, go to best buy, then frys, then circuit city, then walmart, go through them all, play with all the cameras, see which one you like best.
