It depends on what type of a visa he used to enter the United States. Visit visa's usually are valid for 90 days, but renewable for another 30 day period depending on circumstances. You have to apply at your local INS office for an extension. The visit visa holders usually have an I-94 attached to their passport. When you are applying for an extension, this form also has to be submitted with the application for extension. If the INS approves the extension, a new date is stamped on this I-94 form which you are supposed to keep with you until your departure from the United States. If they reject it, they usually give you the last possible date by which you have to leave the US.

A visitor is allowed to stay for the time that the port official stamps the I-94 card. Normally they are given six months and they can extend for up to a year if they file a form I-539 and give a good reason why they need to stay. The maximum time for one visit is one year, but if the port official thinks for some reason that the person should only get thirty or sixty days, then that is all they will get.

It really depends on what type of visa you have.
If you enter from a Visa Waiver country then 90 days. (Europe, Japan, Australia, etc)
If you have a tourist visa, 6 months, renewable for up to a year total. Same with a business visitor visa.
The other 'visitor' type visas, for specific reasons, are for a set period or duration of status. But normally not more than 1 year.

Good luck

My brother in law has a tourist visa and can stay for 6 months at a time, he then has to pass back through the border, but can re enter the same day for 6 more months. He just can not work here. He has no permit for that.

Till the validity of VISA my friend, A visitor is granted several types of visa, The easiest one is the Tourist one and the Other are for several reasons, Medical treatment,Studies,Job,Attending Business meetings or so,
The business visa is for granted for longer duration and it is a Multiple entry Visa, While the Medical/Tourist Visa are Single entry one with restricted stay.
So, the logic of visiting USA, will enable VISA officer to issue VISA for the duration as he deems fit for the logic he is granting the VISA.
THANKS

6 months i'm pretty sure (relative came a few years ago)
i think that pregnant ppl can't be on the plane after 3 months or so
cuz if you add 3 and 6 = 9 = about to give birth
Americans don't want ppl from foreign country giving birth HERE cuz that would be "free granting" of citizenship
