What a wonderful time to get sick... 2 days after Christmas.. Ughh I'm writing this in hopes of somebody being able to help me with my mothers situation.
A while back (probably 3-4 weeks ago) my grandmother was sick...constantly throwing up and having diarrhea sometimes at the same time. Finally the dr had a name for what was happening (by the way, this went on for like 2.5 weeks with her and she lost a lot of weight and this is my fathers mom)... the dr said it was the Norwalk Virus. My dads sister went out and spend the night with her on a friday night (about 2 weeks ago) and the next day she had the same thing and it lasted 2-3 days causing her to miss a day of work. My grandmother was getting better and my parents went out to see her Christmas morning. Assuming, as per usual, they both gave her a hug and kiss on the cheek.

Yesterday (Dec 26) we had my moms mother over for Christmas dinner and then my dad got up this morning to get ready for work (probably about 4ish as he was supposed to leave for work at 5) and got himself almost ready, went out and started the car came back in and my mother was in the bathroom... she now has diarrhea and throwing up sometimes at the same time, like my grandmother. My dad started cleaning up and woke me at 5:30am to tell me that I was gonna have to stay clear of the upstairs (I'm sleeping downstairs as I'm on crutches) and that I should phone a family friend and tell him not to come over today just incase and explain the situation and that I should probably lay off some of my physiotherapy cause if I get it I won't be going in and the last thing they need is me bringing that into the hospital.

Is it possible that my mother now has the Norwalk Virus??? Also, are there things that could help keep her hydrated since she's losing more than she's got goin in at the present time? I thought about buying a bottle of Gaterade or Powerade, or even kids Peteolyte (not sure of the spelling) and seeing if she could drink that, but I wasn't sure if that was a good thing to do or not.
Thanks in advance for any help.

The Norwalk Virus is usually passed by stool - what it sounds like your grandmother has is just a stomach virus. My family & I had something similar this past summer. What you can try doing to stay hydrated is taking a teaspoon of pedialyte every 15 minutes ... as long as you (or whomever is infected) keeps the liquid down, keep taking a teaspoon every 15 mins or so. This will help keep you hydrated. Hope everyone is feeling better soon!

You sure its not a flu? Maybe you should take her/have someone take her to a doctor to finbd if you should get a prescription for the illness. Make sure she has a filled water bottle by her bed every time you check on her. Give her bread to eat w/out butter. Don't give her citrusy/acidy things like oranges. Give her tea for her stomach if she'd like that. Try giving her a peto-bismol and don't give her more of something than a box asks for, and don't give her tons of different good medicines at the same time, that would be bad. Lay off the lactates (milk/dairy products) they won't sit well in her stomach. I would recommend if she's alright, you get ginger ale or carbonated water for her stomach, but no other type of bubbly drinks. I'm not sure about soup, but you can try. If you have Omega-3s capsules at home give her one (they're good for practically everything). And that's all I got.

Make sure she has a lot of fluids and yes she probably got the virus. So much is going around right now. Stay healthy and quick recovery to mom.
