Try giving him a cough medicine with a DM behind it. Such as Robitusion DM. Also putting him in a hot steamy shower might help, or a bathroom that is full of steam. Last but not least, put a humidifier in his room that you can put medicine in it. (Vicks steam). It will help relieve his chest. If it gets worse however, take him to the doctor. There is a lot of upper respitory infections going around no matter where you live.
Cough drops or hard candy to suck on too and hot chocolate to drink.

This is what we had to do with my son:
He had a horrible cough and it got worse before it got better. Yeah you should let him see a dr. in case it settled into something worse.
But the best advise that I was given was to keep a humidifier in his room at night.
Get in the bathroom with hot water on and the door shut, Place a warm washcloth (dangled) over his head, it will start to break up the mucas, and when he starts to cough, light - medium (not hard) smack him on his back (like when you use to burp him when he was a baby.. I know I used a poor choice of word but I couldnt think of another one...sorry) But that will help him get up the mucas, then remind him not to swallow it, to spit the yucky stuff out.
Then before he goes to bed, make him a hot lemon drink with honey.
Boil a lemon in some water ( roll the lemon around to get soft, cut off the ends, and cut a few slits in it) when the pulp is coming out of it you know it is ready. add some honey, let it cool some then let him drink it and go right to bed.

First of all I'd say call his doctor. It probably will take more than 2 days to get rid of a bad cough, but I can understand that you need something that will subside the coughing. I just called my doctor this morning and they told me to give my son ( 16 months old) Triaminic cough and cold. I think I would definately call my docotor as you wouldn't want htis to turn into something worse.

We had premature twins, both of which had a horrible chronic cough. We were advised by our Doctor to use a humidifier in our home. This worked great! You can also add additives that sooth the throat from Vicks. But just having the humidity raised a bit made a big difference. We knew right away because they slept ALLL night! Yes! They have them at Walmart, RiteAid or Walgreens (No, I dont work for them! :) ).

Have you tried Robitussin? That is the only thing that works when my kids get that cough. I know Vick's has a childrens cough medicine too. Also Vicks has a vapor rub that is for coughing. It worked great on my daughter. Good Luck!

Everything gets worse before it gets better. Take him to the doctor. He could be developing a respiratory infection. Something that helps: Turn the shower on hot and sit in the bathroom in the steam with him. The steam will help him breathe.
