Hi,
I asked a friend of myne who is a Muslim, regarding recieving benefit:
He replied:If u are in a situation(i.e not employed, sick etc), were benefit is given to you, afterwards when u start to work it is a good thing to give the money back that was given by the government.
I told him why, he replied:
In the last revelation.. ''Qur' an'' and the Hadith(i.e saying of the prophet) of the prophet Muhammad it states , everyone will be questioned how they spent their wealth and how they earned thier wealth on the day of judgement (hereafter) by God. And another reason is government can provide for others who are inneed.
ME: I actually agree with paying back the benefit i recieved.
Do you agree?

The best way to pay back is to do the best you can with your life. If you work you will pay back a great deal in taxes and productivity to your society. If you still feel more needs to be done after that, send the money to Bush or some charity that helps others.

That was a very telling sort of thing. I am hoping that by answering your question, that I could use it as reference for a certain group that I am in for discussion.
To answer your question:
"He replied:If u are in a situation(i.e not employed, sick etc), were benefit is given to you, afterwards when u start to work it is a good thing to give the money back that was given by the government.
Do you agree? "
Never!
The government is a secular part of the country. The government is seen as being full of thieves, liars; all sorts of evil and corrupt people. They are those that are good at getting people to vote for them. What they do with money is waste it.
In an Islamic controlled country, I imagine it to be the same, with a twist. Islamically controlled counties tend to be guided by religion, or the Laws stated in the Torah and the Qu'ran. There is no 'Separation of Church and State' as recognized by Western standards. So, we have the same kind of news coming out of those countries that are full of religious persecutions similar to the Inquisitions and the like in the past.
So I wonder; Why would a Muslim EVER want to give to the government over giving to the Mosque? Won't a mosque also give to the poor, or is it that they have other things to do with the money?
I am probably not going about this answer the way I would like to, I am so befuddled by it! The government is seen as something other than corrupt, and wasteful! Who would guess?!

You already pay the benefit you receive through taxes. That's one of the reasons we live in a society, everyone can give up a little of their money to provide a safety net for those who can't work. So you really don't have a choice but to pay the money back, or you'll be thrown in jail for tax evasion. But there's no reason to pay anything extra.

You already pay for it.
Sick - Social Security is the FICA tax that is on your check. That amount is also matched by your employer.
Unemployment is an insurance program that is paid by your employer and the rate is based on the number of layoffs.
Both these are really part of your wages. As long as the reason you are off is legit, it is perfectly fine. You wouldn't pay the insurance company back if you crashed your car would you? Same principal.

I'm not a Muslim, but there's one thing your friend may not understand: all of us working in the U.S. pay into the unemployment system. If any of us files an unemployment claim, we get the money we paid back (not all of it, of course). What's wrong with being given your own money that the government put aside for you in case you need it?
Peace.

I sort of agree. Benefits, in most cases, ARE paid back in the form of National Insurance and Income Tax though.
That said, I don't agree with a lot of government policies and how local councils choose to use (or in most cases, waste) tax money.
Okay, what the hell did I say to get a thumbs down?

Absolutely not. The government steals money from me instead of letting me save for myself. Since they are saving my "rainy day" account for me, I feel perfectly justified in taking back when I need it.
However, if you have been a welfare leech your entire life - never having contributed to the savings, then you should absolutely be obligated to pay back every penny plus interest.

This is why we pay taxes is it not? So that the governments can provide benefits for those in need, and if your one in need at some time, did you not pay the taxes at one time that allow you to receive that benefit?
