No reputable breeder advertises online or via a newspaper.
You find them by being in the circle of each breed. They don't want their pets going to people that just decide thats the breed they want.

Nobody actually lists "reputable" breeders. The term is subjective and you might not agree that certain breeders on the list are really reputable, but Miriam has the best answer. Check with the breed's parent club and they'll have a list of breeders who subscribe to their code of ethics. That's a good starting point.

Go to the national breed club website for the breed you are looking for. They will usually have a breeder referral and they will generally be the better breeders.
Petfinder and AKC lists ANY breeders, good or bad.

Miriam has the best advice. Go to the website for the National Breed Club of the breed of choice. They maintain a breeder directory. They do NOT guarantee that the breeders ARE good, but they are soppused to adhere to a code of ethics set fourth by the club, so there is a BETTER chance that you are dealing with someone that is GOOD.
You can also search for the local kennel club that serves your area. They also maintain a breeders directory.

The best website for reputable breeders is the AKC.org.
Any other website you cannot be sure because a lot of backyard breeders and puppy mills have their websites where they claim to have the "best dogs around".
Petfinder.com is the best shelter dog website around. You can search for your area and find a dog who needs some love.
You should check out a Dog Fancy magazine if you are looking for a purebred dog in your area. They have a breeder classified for AKC breeders.

Truly responsible and reputable breeders are NOT breeding right now. Overpopulation is resulting in nearly 5 million homeless animals being euthanized every year.
There are many purebred dogs sitting in shelters across the country. There are two websites that can help you find exactly what you're looking for:
www.petfinder.com
www.1800saveapet.com
You can also do a Yahoo! search for the breed + "rescue"
Please do the right thing. Be part of the solution.

Your best bet is to go to the National Club of the breed in question. For example, if you're interested in a Basset Hound (and you're in the US), you would contact the Basset Hound Club of America. They will have a list of member breeders. It's not a guarantee, but at least these people have gone to the effort of joining the club, and most clubs require that members sign a Code of Ethics.

It depends on what kind of dog you're looking for, but look on "Society" websites for your state (Like Yorkie Society of New York). They should have links to reputable breeders.
