The Glycemic Index Diet, also known as the "GI Diet" has become the recent popular kind of diet in the US. The GI Diet has its origins in diabetics wanting to keep their blood sugar on a normal level. Glycemic index has its way of rating and measuring the blood glucose/ sugar levels when eating a certain type of food.
A rating of 100 is used to measure pure glucose. This makes it easy to know how close the food is to a 100 rate, the higher the GI rate the closer the food is to pure sugar. This shows how rapidly food becomes sugar in the blood stream. The more relevant thing to know is how quickly the blood sugar levels drops, since this affects both diet and our appetite. The lower GI rate the better since the food will absorb in a slow manner, helping to keep blood sugar levels the same thus not feeling hungryfor a ling period of time after a meal.
GI diets have been popular in Europe for years, but only lately they became the focus of attention within the US. With this in mind, the GI Diets have been very popular and healthy weight loss plans. You can choose to have a normal and constant flow on blood sugars based on keeping the Glycemic Index low and lose weight in the process.

It's a diet based on reducing "glycaemic load".
Glycaemic load is related to glycaemic index, but a more powerful tool because it takes into account both how much sugar something contains and how fast it is released.
GL diets try to keep constant low levels of sugar release, because the theory (also the theory behind the Atkins and other low-carbohydrate diets) is that quick bursts of sugar release too much insulin, which in turn reduces your blood sugar level below its resting state, which in turn makes you even hungrier than you were before.
As Atkins said - fat makes you fat, but carbs make you hungry
