I'm sorry to those people that think I was picking on the breed when I asked what I should do if a pitbull attacks. The only web site I fold was this one which was very helpful - http://zia.blogs.com/wastedbirthcontrol/2006/02/what_to_do_if_a.html
It was written by a pitbull owner and rescuer who knows that you can not always count on some owners to raise them correctly. After reading it, I wanted to know if anyone out there who owns, use to own, may have work with pitbulls could provide anymore information. It says that pitbull attacks are different than most dog attacks and does provide some answers. I am cautious with any dog around my daughter, and do know most dogs in our neighborhood already, but this is a new dog and I don't know the owner because they are new to the neighborhood. Sorry to offend, but I was only looking for answers. I would suggest to everyone to read this blog, it is informative.

Again I want to reiterate to you to prevent it from attacking you and yours. Make contact and make it happy.

This site may be helpful to give you knowledge however g*d forbid it ever happen the situation is different. Everything happens so fast if a dog attacks. I know even with the brew of dogs in my house how quick some of them move to get involved in a spat.

Make the pit your friend. Don't feel you can handle him if he attacks

I looked at the blog you suggested. There are a few things in there that are just plain wrong.

Firstly, most Pitbulls have an intense "Prey Drive" they go after squirrels, cats, moles, chipmunks. They are tenacious and usually catch what they are after.

Secondly, dog aggression is a common trait in Pitbulls. Human aggression is absolutely NOT. Think about it - when these dogs were bred to fight other dogs, the handlers had to be sure that they could grab the dogs without being mauled. Therefore, as much as dog aggression has been encouraged in this breed, human aggression has been discouraged. Petey from Little Rascals never bit Darla or Buckwheat right?

Many people say that Pitbulls have an "enzyme" that causes their jaws to lock - to the point that the dog couldn't let go if it wanted to. This is a MYTH. Pitbulls (and many bully breeds) have wider and stronger jaws than most. But they are not magical. If they had "lock jaws" they would have to be classified as a new species.

Please check out www.PBRC.net for info on using breaking sticks. it shouldn't come to that though.

I own two rescued Pits. You can check them out at www.myspace.com/meikoandmizuki They are wonderful pets and they are great with people. Mizuki is training for his Canine Good Citizen Award. They are also wonderful with each other. However, when I am not home, they are crated separately. I would NEVER take my dogs to a dog park. Being a responsible Pitbull owner has different rules. If a Jack Russel bites you, it may do a bit of damage. If a Pitbull (or other large breed) bites you, it's a totally different story.

I have a lot of experience with Pits. I do volunteer work for a shelter in Pittsburgh that takes in many many Pits. We consider ourselves Equal Opportunity for Pitbulls. We have had GREAT success in our adoptions. We are trying to repair the reputation of the breed and educate the public. I use all positive, reward based training to help rehab the dogs that I can.

Pitbulls are not bad dogs. I think you know that, but you're being cautious. Honestly, I would approach your neighbor. I would tell them that you'd like to feel comfortable around their dog. That you don't want to judge their dog on the actions of irresponsible owners. One thing - their dog should be fixed. If it is not, don't bother and keep your child at a distance. Good owners do NOT have unaltered animals. Period. More that 3/4 of dog bites come from males that are not neutered. Use that as your basis of judgment.

I didn't read your previous message/replies. I'm sorry on behalf of responsible Bully owners if you were attacked. Sometimes it's hard. Mizuki was in shelters for 2 years before I rescued him. He was afraid to be touched when I brought him home. I have totally rehabilitate this dog. He is such a little gentleman. A little girl across the street just loves him. He sits so nicely for her to pet him. Yet sometimes people see us from a distance and cross the street. It's upsetting, and I can understand why some owners are defensive. Didn't we stop judging groups on the actions of a few a long time ago?

I hope this helps. Thanks for giving our Bullies a chance.

Thanks for the information! I read your former question. Dog lovers overreact (as does everyone who loves something and feels it is "under attack"), so I would not feel badly. You are right to want to protect your daughter. How many people have to get killed or seriously injured by pitbulls before we start taking the problem seriously? Is it the dog's fault? Of course not... but that does NOT change the FACT that pitbulls serious injure hundreds of people every year. Even if it IS the retard owners' fault when a pitbull becomes aggressive, it is smart of you to want to educate yourself on the subject for safety's sake. If anyone got mad at you for that, then screw 'em. You have your daughter to think about, not their poor hurt feelings. Personally, I think people should have to take classes and be licensed to own potentially dangerous dogs like pitbulls. Anyone who knows how to raise a pitbull correctly shouldn't even get mad about this idea. They'd pass the class with flying colors!

OK here's the deal small dogs are great if you have older children, but remember smaller dogs will bite faster than large dogs the difference is large dogs do more damage. With that said I have two daughters ages 14 and 11 I have a 1 year old pit bull who sleeps next too them and is very gentle when playing he never bites!!! He tolerates more than small dogs my mother had a toy Yorkie that would bite if you just tugged on it or pushed it. It all comes down to what you want in a dog and how you train them. My pit bull wont even bite if i stick my hand in his mouth and move it around or if i steal his food from under him while eating.

Ok, now I forgive you, sorry for thinking something else, here is what my hubby did, while in the woods a pit came from nowhere and tried to attack my female beagle (big mistake she is my black labs pet) Our lab is a moose, all muscle, he is 13 years old and can still keep up with the youngsters and he is tough (but gentle) what happened is ole Rip grabbed that pit by the neck and got him off of my Poppy, then the fight started, my hubby reached in and grabbed rips collar and my son was able to grab the collar of the pit, by the time the owner finally arrived we had the pit chained and tied to a tree, the owner yelled at us and said that we had abused his dog, can you believe that, I later met a lady with a wheaten that had been attacked and killed by the same (we think) pit, the owner is a professor at our local university, go figure

i think of this is available to alter the way human beings sense approximately canines. Or animals oftentimes. very just about a 12 months in the past (somewhat below a 12 months) i did no longer have a canines. yet while my mom and that i went to the puppy save to in straightforward terms look on the canines we ended up procuring a canines. Now my mom loves him so lots extra suitable than I do. and that i've got been a canines lover considering that I met a canines while i grew to become into approximately 2 or 3. :P I constantly pretended to have a canines and asked my mom if i ought to get a canines continuously. Then in the time of the years i assume I replaced her techniques.

you are doing right keep your children protected kids sometimes tease dogs so they can get bit without parents supervision. go meet the new family & you will get an idea of how the dog interacts with new people & see if they have children. pits are protective of thier family & home (naturally) they bit & hold most of the time. you are doing right by getting info & not just assuming all pits are bad good job

The website/blog was very informative. Yes, my first instinct would be to beat it. Now I know different. Pit bulls are very scary, but it is because their owners made them that way. I cannot blame you at all for wanting to look out for your daughters safety. Thanks for the info on what to do. Good luck and God Bless.
