The love story of Krishna and Radha is symbolic of the type of relationship that we can have with Krishna. One can have that kind of relationship with Krishna as your Beloved and become absorbed by Him this way. There are different types of relationships one can have with Krishna like as a friend, as a parent/child, teacher, as a lover and even as an enemy with hate.

You can hate Krishna with a fury and still get liberated through that type of relationship. His enemies became liberated through their hate, intense focus on Him. All of these types of relationships are the same, equal to Krishna. It does not matter how you relate with Him, all that matters is that you think and focus on Him which itself liberates you.

All of us are of different mental affinities and emotional natures. I have a lover type of relationship with Krishna. That best fits my emotional nature. It's what works for me. All of the gopis had intense love for Krishna. They thought of Him in every thing they were doing. They imagined that everything they were doing was for Krishna. They were intoxicated with His love and flirtations. They followed the bhakti path (path of devotion). This path is the most powerful path to take compared to the karma path (path of action/selfless service), raja path (path of meditation/breath), and jnana path (path of knowledge). One can give Krishna their deep love and devotion and still become liberated without not ever meditating. The gopis never meditated and they became liberated through their relationship with their Beloved.

You can read about this type of relationship the gopis had with Krishna in Book 10 of the Srimad Bhagavad, chapters 29-33.

"Text 15
They who constantly exhibit lust, anger, fear, affection, unity and goodwill with the Lord indeed do achieve absorption in Him.

Persons who constantly direct their lust, anger, fear, protective affection, feeling of impersonal oneness or friendship toward Lord Hari are sure to become absorbed in thought of Him. " (Chapter 29)

This is saying that one can have a lustful relationship with Krishna and still become liberated.

There was a novel published in the 1970s that claimed to be based on the various legends and scriptures about Krishna, and that book definitely takes that view, even depicting a very steamy and explicit sex scene between them. I don't know how accurate that is, but it's there. I also recall seeing several Hindu painting that depict them having sex. My copy of the Bhagavad Gita has a clothes-still-on scene from one such series on the cover. From what I have read, Krishna loved all the gopis but especially Radha, though they ended up marrying others.

God and its power have been symbolized like Krishna Radha, Shiva Parvati, Vishnu Laxmi. The experience of union of power with God is enlightenment.
