hey maryam.... i'm lebanese and it's nice to see a fellow arabian muslim use the web... anyway i guess it's because of preconseption... it's like the experiment a societist did, where he showed a picture of a white man dressed like a killer holding a knife against a black man wearing a suit to a person standing in line with some others ... he asked him to tell the guy behind him what he had seen in the picture... and so on.... at the end, he told them to write what they've been told, most wrote that the badly dressed-killer man with a knife was the black one... when in fact it wasn't !!... this is the same kind of condition... westerns seen to think that muslims are either camel-riding idiots... or black nerds... it would be hard for them to understand that you are an english-speaking muslim woman..... take care .... al salamo alaykom... : )

The same reason British Indian people are called pakkies (no disrespect meant, I try to distance myself from any sort of racial insults). People see a muslim, regardless of your born nationality. The fact that they can't even see your face doesn't help.

Is the face cover even required? I thought that was optional. If you choose to wear it you are going to have to endure the consequences. I'm not condoning and racist actions, you have to understand that covering your face is seen as a very anti-social action in most civilisations.

It's probably stereotypes and prejudice. I have a lot of hijab and niqab-wearing fellow pupils in my class at University. I would assume that women I meet with a face cover speak English, unless I heard them speak otherwise.

Because your costume marks you out as belonging to a non western culture. You can't blame British people for jumping to conclusions if you want to wear middle eastern dress-if you're British why not try and integrate with the community instead of deliberately alienating yourself.

Because face covers or veils are associated with the Middle East, and if they can't see your face, they think you are from there, and thus, might not speak English.

Because steriotypically muslim people dont speak english. Also, we cant see your face so you could be a chinese man for all we know.

EDIT: i see all the bad ratings i got. This was meant in a completely honest fashion (sorry) and with a little humor to lighten the subject. (sorry)

because you look like a foreigner, or just funny in the head, in both cases they don't expect you to be able to speak
English.
