In terms of area to cover you will obviously need more if the area is larger and more paint .The rule of thumb for beginners is if you think you have enough mixed; mix up twice as much. The other quality that requires attention as to the amount of water is: how light or dark do you want the color to be?Lighter add more water .Darker more paint. The intensity of color will also decrease or increase depending on the water content of the mixture .Also wether or not you are pre wetting the paper will have an effect on how much water to put in the mixture .It takes a bit of practice !Using a scrap piece of the same paper you are painting on to "test" the mixture and see how it looks when it dries is a good idea.A good book can help you a lot, I recommend "Watercolor :You Can Do It !" by Tony Couch. It is now sadly out of print .But the library could have, or get one or maybe a used one off amazon .He also has videos on his website.Good luck!!!

First , with masking tape, tape all the edges of your watercolour paper to a board ..cardboard or anything flat. Draw your picture in light pencil Then wet the paper carefully with a sponge and let to dry . Now paint the picture in very pale colours in flat blocks .Let to dry . And continue to work on it but always remember it must be delicate and to anwer your question at last ,if it is a big area of the same colour mix it before but test the colour as more water makes the colour paler.
The beauty of water colour is the transparency of it so bear in mind all the time the quality of your brush stroke .
And lastly study the greats . Cotman in particular ..

No but they sell lots of books on the subject you need to go to and art and crafts store or Just type How to paint with water colors in your search engine. I am sure that you will come up with something.
I to like to paint but I paint with oil colors I have always wanted to paint with water colors they don't smell as bad. But they are much harder to paint with.
One thing thought just use a small amount at first until you get the right consistency trial and error

If you need a lighter color, then use more water. If you need a richer, darker color, use less water. Never use the white water color to lighten a color, only more water.
