Here are a few possibilities:
1) Are you sure you're not thinking of an episode (or two) of ER?
Noah Wyle and Goran Visjnic both look a little like Justin Long - and there've been episodes of ER where they've both had to travel to Africa for medical purposes.
2) Patrick Swayze played a doctor in Calcutta India in the movie City of Joy. Is that a possibility? Not sure if you'd call him "young", though it was a movie from the early 90s, I believe...
3) The Constant Gardner - starring Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz - only thing is, neither of them are American so I guess that doesn't work. They do travel to Africa, though...
Anyway...maybe it's one of those. Do you have any other details that might help make the search a little easier?
