it is more a deterence than anything else now but if the need ever arises where casualties are so immense that the only way to win would be to use it, then yes its a good for last resort

Atomic energy and atomic bombs go hand in hand. Although having the bomb is not a good thing, having the bomb for defensive posturing seems the way of the world. To get rid of all nuclear bombs could never be verified or trusted to be verified. All the world can do right now is stop the manufacturing of any more. It cannot let other countries use the excuse that some countries have nuclear bombs as a reason for them to have them as well.

Imagine a room full of people where only one has a gun. That person owns the others. When America got the bomb, and Russia and China followed suit, the Djinn was out of the bottle and Pandora's box was opened wide. Nations without the bomb are basically at the mercy of those that do. Until all countries are willing to verifiably disarm (and who will be able to police such a thing!) we are going to have to live (or die) with this problem.

Is there a need? No.

Is there a practicality? Yes.

An atom weapon is a good deterrent when a responsible government has control of them.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a responsible government...

Unfortunately, the Pandora's Box has been opened and we can't go back to Trinity....it's a necessary evil...a deterrence as some have mentioned. Will we always be staring into the black abyss of nuclear holocaust??? hmmm, probably.
