We brought our 2 year old Sheltie home from a breeders house yesterday and as soon as I opened the door she bolted down the street. My first instinct was to chase her which I know is wrong. She just kept running.

We hade neighbors help search through the neighborhood and eventually gave up looking last night. We had a towel and bone that the breeder gave us with her scent on it and I laid it down on our front porch with food and water. I looked outside at 6 this morning and she was laying out there.

I tried sneaking around the back but as soon as she saw me she ran again. I didn't chase her this time but just sat down on the ground. 30 minutes later she came back and now I am not sure what I should do. I am waiting for my vet to open to see if I can get a trap or tranquilizer. Any sugestions would be appreciated.

You may trap a critter you DON"T want and if you tranquilize you may put the dog at risk of being attacked by another animal or even hit by a car.

If it is at all possible, have the breeder come over to call the dog since the dog has been with him/her for 2 years. There's a good chance the dog will come right to him.
Then you will have to be careful and give the dog time to adjust to her new surroundings. Don't give the dog opportunities to bolt.

When you get hold of her put a long line on her collar. When you do catch her do not open the door with out the long line on her.. Does she like to ride in the car? if she does then open the door and put the towel in it. She is just not sure where she is and who you are? Get hold of the breeder and see if they can help you get hold of her. You were right about not chasing her it would make her run faster from you. Also try running the other way with a toy. Shelties can be shy around people they do not know.

The porkchop around the neck sounds funny, but it is the right idea.
I've had to catch many a loose dog. Sit in the grass with treats, human food works well for this. The animal will slowly work his way over to the food. Don't move, just let him keep working his way over to you on his terms. Any left over meat in the fridge will work. It could take 1/2 hr to an hour so dress warmly. Eventually , if you hold still, just talk in a normal voice, he'll come in for the food. As he is eating, gently put hand on his collar.

Make a game out of it. Get a toy that the dog can see and shout come and run the other way to the way she is running. The dog will think you are playing and run after the toy.
When you do get her back - get the dog chipped at the vets.

Do whatever you have to, but catch that dog NOW. Call animal control for help.

I've seen dogs get run over by cars, and cars almost getting into accidents by avoiding a dog darting into traffic.

If someone else calls animal control and get her before you do, she will be fixed. I doubt your vet can help you.

wow, sounds like you got a handful...how about putting some food in the bowl and shaking the bowl with the food in it....leave the house door open and put the bowl inside....then stand by the door to shut it when she runs in. if it was my dog i would just chase it down anyway.

Tie a porkchop around your neck and lay down in the grass.

After it comes home, take it to see the dog pound and tell it that runaway dogs end up here! ! scare the hell out of it.
