A sieve is used more when baking and is for dry ingredients e.g. Flour, Sugar. This removes any lumps etc. from the mixture and makes it more fine and even. A colander and strainer are pretty much one in the same and they are used for draining liquid such as when you have boiled potatoes and want to remove the water.

Without getting technical the first answerer hit the nail on the head. However I would be inclined to ascertain how much of what I'm about to pass through all three I would like retained.
Example: Rice through a colander designed for pasta.....
I'm buying chinese tonight!

I think a colander is a sink positioned item, and a strainer in part of the pan , sits inside and is just lifted out when pasta is done

I think the difference is the size and use of the particular item. I think different ones have different sized holes, so that you would use them for different purposes - for example, larger holes to drain pasta, smaller holes to strain fruit juice.
