There is none. Check the ratings at http://www.cnet.com as the ratings change all the time. But if there WAS a best, it would not be for long. The HACKERS would love to go after just one solution. You see, it is best if we use many different solutions. The diversity makes us all less vulnerable to attack.

But I use the plain version of Norton Antivirus. I use a different firewall, and use Ad-aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy for my anti-spyware solution.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

All of the anti spyware programmes work, and I've tried most of them in the past. Nooton and McAffee are both good at the anti virus job, but are rather intrusive and heavy footed, Norton in particular being very resource hungry.

Of the other more lightweight alternatives , I have found AVG to have the best combination of lightfootedness, effectiveness and value. If you on't feel that a free version can be any good, don't worry, AVG won't be available in it's free version for much longer, BUT the paid for versions are very good value, particularly if you want to install in on a number of PCs. I agree with Danuitti; Ad-Aware & Spybot S&D are excellent wares.
I use it at home. We have Norton at work and it is annoying as hell. It pops up with some new "update" every ten minutes, it seems. It also slows down the computer, and doesn't seem to provide much protection at all. After running Ad-Aware & Spybot S&D on the computer at work, I found several dozen problems that were immediately corrected with the 2 aforementioned wares. Norton allowed them all in.
Oddly, Ad-Aware & Spybot S&D are free, while Norton Anti-Virus is not.

I like WebRoot Spy Sweeper better than Norton. I was reading one of the internet mags last year and liked what was said about WebRoot. I made the change from Norton which I had used for several years, and have not been disappointed. Incidently, WebRoot Spy Sweeper is cheaper.

I have AVG,it's free, updated daily,I've had it for a very long time and I haven't had any problems,yet... I've had Norton also, which seemed a bit more rest-assuring since u have to pay for it,but that really doesn't mean anything just because u pay for it doesn't make it any better.
