It depends on the airlines you are traveling with. In some airlines, like American ones especially after 09/11, you can just have you and your clothes which you are wearing! Even as a lady you are not allowed to have your lipstick with you! But in some airlines you are allowed to have your hand bag with yourself.

Your best bet is to check the website of the Airline you will be flying, Delta, American, Southwest, etc. Most will allow a carry on (check dimensions of bags allowed on flight first), that you can carry your liquids-they are restricted on average to 100 ml or 3 oz average clear plastic bottles for shampoo, conditioner, perfume, makeup ie. liquid foundation, etc-although the combined bottles can only fit in a 1 quart (about 8 inch X 5 inch) clear ziploc bag, all items must be labeled. Use the carry on for the most important things, passports, prescription medications, wallet, etc. Have the clear ziploc out of your bag prior to security check, and all jewelery off and ready to go through security checkpoints. Always best to check with websites of the airlines, and call and speak with a representative if you have further questions.

I believe its the usual that you can't bring or bring in the plane.
Most stuff will be in your main luggage but I believe when going to the US, you can't bring liquids and they check this at the airport. If you do then you have to check that bag in!
But i'd suggest contacting the airline and also the airport just to confirm any changes to save you any hassles when you get the airport

Contact the airlines you are traveling with or the airport that you are traveling from and to. Each airport handles these things a little differently.

Right now the restrictions are really tight on liquids and gels. I would suggest that you go to the TSA website http://www.tsa.gov/ they are the organization that sets the regulations and they have the complete list of what you can and can not bring on the aircraft with you in both your carry on and checked luggage.
Hope this helps!
