One simple way is to search the process name in yahoo. for example searching winlogon.exe gives http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/winlogon/
which advises you whether it is necessary or could be shut off.

You first need to know which program is running the process. Turning off any "system" process shouldnt be done but the worst thing that may happen will be a restart of your computer. If a process is using a large amount of memory and your not sure, stop it and see. Dont stop your anti virus program. Sometimes a program is running in the background that you dont need to run. Slowing your comp down.

Don't delete them - turn them off. Go into msconfig (Click "Start" then "Run" Then type in "msconfig" Click on the Startup tab and untick those programs you don't need. If you are unsure about some, untick them one at a time. Run you computer and try out over a period of time to see if there is a problem. If it is, then just re-tick the program. You will get a notification everytime you switch on your computer, but you can disable that message if you wish. I though, like to have a reminder. Hope that helps, best wishes. R. W.

Use the Bleeping Computer Startup Programs Database at:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/

BTW, 45 is a bit more then I would prefer to have running at startup. I have 26 processes at startup here.
