Well, I would also soon be coming to Canada but as I have lived outside my home country....I can give you a fair idea to settle down in a new city. U have not mentioned regarding your profession...!! Like any other big city, Toronto is also a big city and the hub of Canada. Cost of living would be expensive. I would suggest you to look for rented accommodation if you are travelling single or with your family. U can look for information about accommodation in the daily newspapers in the classifieds advertised in them. Check out the newpaper's websites like toronto star, toronto sun etc. Same goes for jobs. I guess living in the GTA(Greater Toronto Area) would be less expensive than living downtown. Your priority after landing should be your job. If you get a good job preferably in your chosen profession then nothing like it...!! Earning and saving should go hand in hand. Property rates are high in Canada and hence if you would be looking to buy a house then you would need to save as much as possible in shorter time....banks would provide assistance and mortgage facilities depending upon your credit history and your circumstances. Food shouldn't be expensive unless you can cook for yourself. Travelling might be expensive. You will have to check out the transport rates for the buses, railway etc. Second hand cars would be cheap but again insurance, motor tax etc would be high. So think before buying a car as this is a left hand drive country. You would need to learn left hand driving to take up the license unless you already know it. Taxes again would be on the high side. The weather goes in minus degrees in the peak winter so protective warm wear is essential. Initially the going would get tough but you should get mentally prepared for it and should be able to balance between your necessities and luxuries. Job earning and saving should be the highest priority which would help you in the future over there. Even if you leave the job, try to get a good reference from your employer as this would help you in your next job. People are good and helpful. I hope I have answered your questions...!!?!!

Well as a new commer you dont need lots of money. I would say about $5000 will give you chance to get set.

It is better to come to the places where jobs are available with great ease.

I live in Calgary, employers a begging people to join them.. Job market is very hot...but in toronto its not...

Rent has gone up due to hot economy in calgary, but still cheaper than toronto....

If I were to move to some other country, I would select the city which atleast give me job instantly....which is very important...if you start earing you wont feel the presure of rent or anything....come with your whole family and put them in work...you will be all set up...no worries...

and make sure you pick calgary flames as your favourite hockey team!!! Go Flames Go

We live in Mississauga, GTA in Ontario for 2 years now. We also immigrants. How to settle in Toronto/ Canada? First you must brings lots of money with you, since it is a very expensive city to live in and prepare yourself mentally and physically. It it the best way to come by yourself first without any family (wife or kids), so that it will be easier for you to sleep just anywhere at the guest house. You could find it at craigslist.com to find place for 1. After you settle for an apartment, you could start to build your resume (go to HRDC canada) and in the mean time look for a survival jobs, ie, mcdonald etc.....
It is certainly not easy to begin with.....but it will be a lot easier if you go by yourself, cheaper, and after you settle, ask you family to come to join you......Good luck.....it is a long way to go....but I guess it is worth to try....
