I like an aloof dog.. I am a handler of German Shepherds in the sport of Schutzhund which is tracking, obedience and protection. The German Shepherd is the best all around watch dog for the general household.

Now, in some foreign countries they use the small dogs that have excellent hearing such as the maltese to guard the inside of the house.. they hear something first and bark alerting the outside guard dogs which in turn "handle the problem". It was very effective.

All dogs can bark, and bite someone. If you want a real GUARD DOG, and not a watch dog, there is a difference. Then that is easy, get a breed that was made with just this in mind, and has been proven for many years.

For you most likely to recommend a ROTTWEILER. Rottweiler is best hands down for this job, and will not back down ever if you are in trouble, you do not even have to train it to do this, it will, because this Dog was breed over , and over for this work. And if raised from a puppy, he or she will never let you down. I am sure that other dogs will try to protect you, but I promise if it is not a substantial sized dog, breed to protect you.

Doberman Pinschers are an excellent watch/guard dog,but they are not meant for a novice owner. They are very intelligent and head Strong. They need be taught they are not the boss, you are. They are fearless, assertive and have tremendous strength and stamina. Still though they are very devoted, loyal and very affectionate to their owners. They definitely will alert you if someone comes even near your home. The bark alone will scare someone away. If you choose this breed please do a Lot of research. Good luck to you on which ever dog you may choose.

I have an exceptionally cranky Rhodesian Ridgeback. He is however very obedient, will stop barking on my command, sheds very little and when he is not snarling at everyone including (sometimes) me is a real little cuddle hound. Great watch dog, great guard dog, but I can not for example give a guest the keys to my home and let them come and go even if I am not there. He will not let them in once they are out unless I am there to let them in even after he has been introduced to them.

Alsatian,Rottweiler,German Shepard,Doberman

All of these breeds are good for guarding purposes, as this is the reason they were bred for in the first place!

Although the rotty and to a lesser extent the doberman need very care full handling from very early on, because they can be very dominant breeds! This is the reason you have to be very cautious with them around young children!

in mo i would choose a Alsatian / German Shepard!

My personal preference for the best home protection dog is without a doubt the Fila Braseilro. All you need to do is raise them as a puppy. No protection training needed. It's their temperament. Of course they still need obedience training. But, I can promise you this, If you get the right Fila, from a reputable breeder, you will never have to worry about anyone breaking into your house.

A Poodle is the best. But does not have a big bark. So you have two dogs. Find any large dog and the Poodle will bark and the big dumb will hopefully follow.
