Yeah, I had it in the past, really really bad. I did get over it and have a great life now, but sometimes it comes back and bites me on the bum.
The main thing is not to feel guilty about how you're feeling. Do what you can to feel better, but take your time, it won't disappear overnight. Lean on your friends, or even lean on your Answers buddies. We're all here for you!

Every thought that goes through your head is a chemical signal, triggering a stored memory attached to that thought.
Look at the other side of the coin. If you take the drug Extascy, it triggers the seratonin levels in your brain to such an extent, you feel wonderful. However, the nerve ending get such an overdose, they become de-sensitised, and long term users of the drug become very depressed, because they can no longer register the normal seratonin levels. Seratonin is responsible for depression in the same way that food is responsible for hunger. If you have more food, the hunger will go away, but it didn't cause it in the first place!
Chillies and Cocca (Chocolate) are both mild seratonin-releasing substances. And the mild low after the high is the start of a depression.
The biggest cause is stress. There is so much going on in your head, that you start to loose sleep, Our sleep is divided into two sections, the first is where we chemically repair the body, the next is where we manage the data, and re-shuffle it around.
The huge amount of brain activity, worrying about something when under stress is causing our hearts to beat faster, seratonin to be released, but we are so pushed that we don't notice this high. When the pressure is suddenly removed, wham, we hit a brick wall of stress.
The body is however out of balance, and the low seems worse, because without its normal maintaince, the levels of seratonin are so low, and the receptors in the brain so burnt out, we feel utter despair.
My once and only experience with stress (I hope) was after an Ofstead Inspection at the college where I once worked. It was dreadful, and I went on the prescribed drugs for a week or two, which made me into some sort of emotional zombie. Kicking the drugs was worse than the stress, but I have given up smoking in the past, so I guess I am a very determined person. However, there are hundreds of folks out there who take this rubbish for life, and they have little hope of getting back to a normal life.
Best advice, is to weather the storm, and try to do it without medical help. Your brain will heal itself if given a chance - and not damaged by taking too much seratonin inducing chemicals (caffeine, choc and chillies) whilst you try to get back into balance again.

I dont think there is any one thing that causes depression and it can effect anyone.
My mother suffers from depression and it is hard trying to keep her upbeat sometimes. It is very easy for people to give advice on how to stay positive as I am always telling my mother the same. I mean you cant change the past in anyway so you have to concentrate on the future. The future is what you make it and it will be alot better if you are happy.
I sometimes feel depressed but being able to recongise it is the best cure. When I know I have to tell myself to snap out of it and look at the good things that are going on around me even really little things.

I was depressed about 3 years ago. I was over weight and I just started college after being out of school for over 10 years. I went to the doctors to get on some weight pills and that is when the doctor told me that I was depressed. I thought that he was crazy when he first told me, but then I realized a few months later that he was right. I did not get on any medication for either the depression or the weight, but I really just needed someone to talk to. Now I am better and I have lost 30lbs since then. Don't really know how I did it, but I focused a lot on school and my girls.....and not so much on the fridge.
So no, you are not alone at all. I believe that all of us are depressed at one point in our lives and it is common. I hope that the depression goes away fast, because I hated that feeling and I don't wish it upon anyone. Have a nice day and Good Luck!!

I have it and I know it will never go.
Mine is caused by years of domestic violence and low self esteem and thankfully I am no longer in those situations.
I have made so many changes during the past 6 months and I am aiming higher.
I find it helps.
Doing things that are positive helps,
I've stopped questioning myself so much, and I'm doing stuff that I like doing.
I've also cut off the people that are making me feel bad- Which really helps.
My depression has been so bad that quite a few years ago I took an overdose with out any thought for my children. I didn't care I just wanted to go, which was cos My daughter had died and I couldn't cope with her death and all the spiteful things people were saying-
Put yourself first, try and be positive and work out what is making you feel like this.
Good luck sweetie

after graduating hs and breaking up with a long time bf I became really depressed. My psychiatrist said that sometimes a situation triggers the depression. I am an optimist by nature but that didn't stop me from getting depression. there is a difference between getting depressed (which we all do at times) and having depression which is a brain chemical imbalance. Once I began meds I no longer felt hopeless, I wanted to go out again, I felt generally happier...but pills don't solve it all though! Even while on pills I get "depressed" and have sad/bad days I think that is normal.

Depression is caused by a lack of the chemical Seratonin which lets your brain know your happy . But don't confuse feeling down about things with being depressed as far to many people think that they are depressed when in fact something has just made them feel a unwanted or of little use , if you want to try and beat depression first thing to do is just believe in yourself and know you have a worth.

Yes, we al have experienced depression in our life times, at some point.
The best way to avoid depression is to surround yourself with possitive thinkers, work only where you are highly motivated and love the work, and keep your own personal environment full of all the little things you enjoy.
These three things will keep your life on the positive side, where you want to be.
Unfortunately, life will dish out a few lemons to everyone. That's inescapable. Make the most of the cards you are dealt, and don't blame others for your status.
Instead, work toward goals and keep active.
Above all, Good Luck and good health!
God Bless.

Yes, everyone gets depressed and lots of things can cause it. Sometimes it's an illness. Doctors can treat it. The best way however, to be positive is to turn everything over to God and remember He has more time and resources to deal with the problem than you do. Look, like the song says:"Ain't nothin' to get hung about." I love you and know other people do too. I don't have to know you personally I can tell you're beautiful, inside and out.

A depressed mood is generally situational and reactive, and associated with grief, loss, or a major social transition. A change of residence, marriage, divorce, the break-up of a significant relationship, the death of a loved one, graduation, or job loss are all examples of instances that might trigger a depressed mood.
Listen to some romantic or slow musics. Practise control breathing or Yoga. This are a short tips from me.
