Proverbial chicken egg story. Drying up the incentives to come to USA may not necessarily mean the factors that trigger them from their countries have been neuntralised. So, the balance between the "Push" and "Pull" factors becomes very intricate to find. And remember, it is even harder to deal with the push factors considering that you will be dealing with over one hundred countries each with unique problems that eject their own citizens to greener pastures. Its ridiculous, but, many illegals that live in filthy flats shared by about 10 people, sleeping in turns due to the limited space, probably find it "better" to stay that way than go back home.
The wall at first thought sounds a once and for all solution. But the migrants from Africa and beyond do not come by road or path via the mexican border. They come by air. And they still are illegals. Nor, is the porosity of the border the "Alpha and omega" of why illegal immigrants find the US an attractive destination. Probably, if you get all those who are already in the US to contribute to the national purse, by way of making them productive to increase the national product, and say even tax them, arent you again making the "Pull" factor more attractive? But again, if you starve them of any opportunities to live with the intention of getting them go back home once they realise its impossible to survive as illegals, arent you going to get people choosing to die rather than go home, and calls for "murder"?
I visualise the wall as being similar to the scorching hot Sahara desert and the perilous canal that stands between Spain and North Africa. Many have seen their relatives die in the sands trying to walk across that expanse of a desert, and many who miraculously make it across it, die again in the rough waters aboard dug-out tree canoes. And yet, they still believe luck would be on their side if they ventured across that "wall" which separates them from the "Pull" factor.
Like all chicken-egg situations, I do not suggest a miracle solution, but contribute to a good debate to help those who will make the solution policy.

WE need a "comprehensive" plan and NOT that abortion that Kennedy and his clan are proposing. Actually the 1986 plan would have worked just fine but no one enforced it.
I don't understand why you would think deporting them would be inhumane. It's not like we are going to tie a rope to them and drag them back across the border. 12 million deported with who's money? With the same money that is being spent to keep them here...yours and mine. Read the Senate's amnesty plan. Ask yourself how much will it cost to implement. Believe me it is far cheaper and less time consuming to put them on the next bus out of town then to process them for citizenship. The cost of illegal immigrants to Federal, State, and local governments is about 20 billion dollars per year. Legalizing them would double those costs because they would be eligible for many more services. The costs of deporting them would be recouped in about 8 years,
The soluton is simple. Use common sense. Enforce the law. Declare martial law in "sanctuary" cities. It is outrageous that any city can stand up and declare that they will not enforce the law. The law is the law. Good, Bad, or Indifferent. You cannot pick and choose which ones you will enforce. What would happen if a city stood up and declared themselves sanctuary for murderers, rapists, and child molesters? How long do you think it would take for the government to roll in there and take charge? Why is sanctuary for illegal aliens any different? Why isn't the government taking charge?

First we need tougher laws. Laws that should have been implemented years ago. Look at Mexico's laws against illegals. Why couldn't our wonderful Government think of that???
Go after companies who knowingly hire illegals. Send the company executives to jail and deport the illegals.
Then we need better control at the border. Wall will help but we need troups or border patrol or whatever monitoring border 24/7. Not sitting in an office, but actually patrolling the border!! We have all this technology we should be using it!! This will also prevent illegals who have been deported from sneaking back into the US.
For the 12 million that are here already, they need to be deported as well. Increase police force by any means you can and go after the illegals. There is no excuse for an illegal living in the US and not even trying to become a US Citizen!! If they can prove that they haven't been in the US that long and they have started the process to become legal, then they could stay

No, because each and every person in this country whether US citizen by whatever means (born or naturalized), legal, illegal, extralegal, extraterrestrial, etc. cannot live without commiting ANY crime. Every second of the day, NOBODY follows the speed limit law. If we follow the analogy of the racists/haters that, law breaker = criminal, then all persons with valid driver's license, fake driver's license, no driver's license, suspended driver's license. revoked driver's license are all criminals because they are law breakers! Illegal immigration is very much like over speeding or reckless driving. The law is enforced, but it's impossible for the police to catch each and every criminal, because as he is giving a citation to a criminal, hundreds of criminals are overspeeding by. In illegal immigration, as the border patrol is deporting 1 Mexican, 1000 Mexicans are simultaneously illegally crossing the border. So, it's just a vicious cycle.

You can't have it both ways, if you'er for legal immigration, then all the illegal aliens need to be deported and apply for legal entry just like all the legal immigrants.
You can't have 'secure borders' when there isn't a "border" along the southern US. Nor can you control your border when who's entering the country isn't known.
The cost of enforcing our immigration policy and laws is most likely less than the cost of illegal immigration. One third of Mexico's gross national product is money received from the US. That's dollars that are not spent in the local economy and of no benefit.
How is it not humane to ask and require people to return to their country if they're here illegally? They made the decision to enter without papers and are responsible for their decision. Why should the American taxpayer have to accept responsibility for the illlegal actions of non-citizens?

You answered your own question, you want the ones here that have been 'qualified', to be legalized. Do you let them them know this before or after a wall goes up? How is it inhumane, unreasonable, illogical to send them home? Mexico should pay for deportation, they told their people to come here. As far as the 12 million here now, (although I think the number is higher than that), eliminate their jobs by enforcing the laws on employers who hire illegals. Make it a 3 strikes and your out law on every employer. The problem will resolve itself if we simply start doing something now. Send 'em home by enforcing the law, that's not too crazy is it?
Also, cut off all aid to Mexico if they don't want to help - we do it to other countries all the time. Mexico should pay at least half for building a wall, and they should apologize to all legal immigrants.

Stop the jobs that they come here for. That is the first step. That alone will help secure the borders. Then enforce the laws we already have in our country. As far as the 12 million that are already here. Give them an option, leave or be arrested and deported. yes , it will cost alot of money, but doing the right thing is more valuable then a watered down immigration.

Have you ever noticed that the first person to alledge that some one else is a racist , is the real racist themself. I think they all need to be sent back to Mexico if they cannot prove they got here legally. If they want legal status, they need to go home, go through proper paperwork to get back legally. It would be a lot cheaper than supporting all of them through the welfare system, and save us a lot more money. I think the borders do need to be secured. I am sure you only want answers that agree with you and the rest will be considered a moan or complaint. If so, why post the question.

I don't like it but it looks like the only way to really solve the problem is to legalize them all and start collecting some revenue (taxes) from them. The flood of illegals is already so far out of control that to try to stop it now is like the proverbial finger in the dyke. As soon as you stop one leak, hear comes 300,000 more. I say make them all legal and lets work on the national debt. Can you imagine if all the illegals that are working for $3 an hour suddenly start making 6, 7, 8 dollars an hour AND start having to pay taxes? That would generate revenue and might also stem the tide of illegals, due to red tape requirements in getting citizenship and the tax requirement. Can you also imagine the drop in the welfare strain? All these illegals that "have no income" suddenly making too much to suck off the teets of the American public? Might be another deterant. Just a thought.

We first should have tougher laws.. Laws that we will obey by. Second we should punish business that hire illegals.
If we just work on this first we wouldn't have a big problem now.
To solve the problem now. I would make them leave. Make them pay a penalty for being here illegally oh wait we have that.
Make their country take them back. Fine that country for allowing them to come over here illegal.

If bleeding heart American liberals and greedy business owners didn't meet illegals with open arms, they would go away on their own. It's too easy to find housing, jobs, and government assistance. If they were to arrive and find nowhere to live, no job, and face harsh penalties for being here illegally, why would they want to come? I don't like to see human suffering but we have more than enough born citizens struggling in a bad economy that we don't need to be importing more. We need to take care of our own first. We are a strong country but we can't support the whole world's needy population.
