I asked my friend the same question and he told me this, when you are walking in the sand you get bit by sand fleas, when you are walking in the sand you might step on something and its 8 legs will curl around the top of your boots cause its a big @ss camel spider, check your boots before you put them on they could have a scorpion in them, they dont have mice that run around in the desert they have huge rats the size of raccoons that would be happy to take a bite out of your body, being in hundred twenty heat all day in full gear man that must be pretty hot close to sitting in your car in summertime with a coat on, having men and women around you that dont showers for days and days or people spreading diaseses like lice or crabs, driving down the road and seeing your convoy run over something that looks like an empty cardboard box and it blows up and kills your best buddy and few other friends, sitting on the toilet and getting rounds shot at you, or talking to your wife or girlfriend on the phone and your wife or girlfriend hears gunfire and the phone goes dead and phones go down for two weeks and she doesnt know if you are alive or dead and there is no way you can let her know, or it rains and phone lines go out and your family doesnt know if you are alive and on top of all that you have Iraqi men, women children trying to kill you on a daily basis, and damn you dont even get paid very much and you get to stay over there for a year and when you come home you find out you have to go right back, hmmm i wonder why they dont want to go back

I have never heard of this. I think you have it wrong. War is a nasty affair. Most of the problem may stem from the National Guard(IMO) as they are not fully trained active duty soldiers. I am grateful for their service YES. But, I believe the govt has dropped the ball with all the active duty military cuts over the past 15 years and now we see the issues at hand. Barely enough troops to hold down what we are fighting for.

It is great to see new recruits going into the military. As for going a 2nd time. I was in the USN 1996-2004, eight years. I was there when the war went down. First 6 months in Oceans near Afghan. Then 6 months in Med. back for 2 weeks. Assigned new ship. Back out 6 months in Med for Iraqi Freedom. Back for 3 months. Assigned again this time back to Iraq Persian gulf. I know their pain. Granted not the year long deployments they endure but deployment none the same and back to back.

I would call any soldier that whined about doing his job a coward. I may not have agreed with any of the reasons. But, I went because my President asked me too. Bottom-line.

Thanks

I'd like to see statistics to back up this "statement"... I've READ stories of 3 specific individuals and perhaps a few dozen who've run to Canada.

I think there is a VERY low percentage of the 2.8 million military members who are refusing to return.

I served with the USN from 1986-1999... and there were ALWAYS one or two individuals who would chicken out prior to cruise and go AWOL.

Because they have seen the detruction, the human loss, the casualties, the blood, the horror, the death, the pain, and don't want to risk their lives anymore for a military invasion of Iraq.

In three words, WAR IS HELL. The emotional and psychological toll of war is more devastating than physical wounds. This is why so many soldiers go bonkers and the divorce rate among returning veterans is so high.

Because the media focuses on the few that hide in Canada and not the 2 million + that are all taking their turn in the sandbox. It's not a matter of whether they "agree", They took an oath "foreign and domestic..." I just figure they bit on the "free college" but aren't willing to work for it. In closing, nobody forced them to join, so the ones crying and hiding should just shut up and color. You joined the military, what'd you expect, weekend ski trips?

Where did you get that statistic? Last year re-enlistment was at an all time high. To be honest no military personal wants to deploy overseas anywhere, whether it is a war zone or not

Mostly because you can't tell who the enemy is. Most of the Iraqis are friendly, but the enemy wears the same clothes. It's kind of like going into a boxing match while your blind folded, but your opponent can see.

First off, I think that you are wrong, many go back, I feel that it is "Time served" and they should not have to go back. It's a nasty place filled with cowards who plant bombs on the side of the road because thats all they can do, they would'nt dare take on our boys in a fair fight, if they do, the U.S. Forces just zero in on them and kill them, so they do what they can to annoy us. I'm very proud of our troops, and thought of them on Christmas. I hope they know that we are thinking of them, and wish them a safe tour and a speedy trip home !

Can you blame them? It is scary over there... and now more than before in other gulf situations, they face their mortality more directly.
