I live in a town of about 7000 people and the nearest metro area is about 75 minutes away and another one is about the same. There's a town that's about 2x-3x bigger than mine about 30 mins. away. I guess one thing I really need to know is if the "dinner and a movie" date is outdated. Keep in mind the population of my town and how very little there is to do around here. I'd really prefer women to answer. Thank you.

Dinner before or after the movie?

I like the dinner-movie date. The movie breaks the ice and gives you something to talk about at dinner if you're nervous.

If you're not sure, take her to dinner, but ask her about a movie. She may have another idea of something she would like to try.

Make sure to ask her about that and to tell her your plans before your date so that she will be able to choose appropriate clothing. Never just say, "So what do you want to do?" after you've already picked her up--that makes you seem really disorganized and inconsiderate.

A good first date should be lunch at a unique restaurant. Do it on a Saturday when you can spare some time to take a walk together afterwards if the rapport is there. If there is no rapport then you can both leave politely and nothing is lost. Driving 30 minutes out of your way is putting way too much stress on the both of you.

The first 'date' I ever went on was simply dinner and a movie.. and that was fine, and gave me a glimpse of the guy's character: is he polite, does he insist on paying, is he gross, etc. But I honestly enjoyed walking around and talking more than anything. Stuffing your face and watching a screen for a few hours doesn't open the possibility of conversation. I don't know where you live, but try ice skating, going to a dance/club, or anything where you can socialize with eachother.

If she comes from another town, first take her for a drive around town. Then, having a little picnic in a park is a good idea. Good luck!
