The Julian Calendar had the first month as March.

SEPtember therefore was SEVENTH month, (SEP =7)
OCTober was the EIGHTH month, (OCT = 8)
NOVember was the NINTH month, (NOV =9)
DECember was the TENTH month. (DEC = 10)

When the Roman Catholic Church got control, it not only changed how the years were dated, but moved the year up three months. Supposedly if Jesus was born on December 25th, (he wasn't) then he would have been circumcised 7 days later, on 1 January, which was a good excuse for starting the new year on that date.

The celebration of a "new year" is a pretty common practice. The Egyptians celebrated the rise of Sirius, the Dog Star, because that came just before the Nile Floods which regenerated the land. The Jews celebrate a New Years also, Rosh HaShanah, but since their calendar is a lunar calendar with a solar correction, it "moves" from year to year and is not in the same season of the year.

See, there's this thing that we do where we tie the passage of time to the movement of the earth around the Sun. When the earth makes one complete cycle around the Sun, we call that a year. As the Sun passes that mark, we shift into something called a "New Year".

So there you go.
