tumeric is the closest poor mans safn,almost the same colour,with a mild flavour,a ground spice from the indies used a lot in indian cookig

yes safflower. It suppose to be inferior. I think its only used to give the same color as saffron. Some saffron also mixes safflower to make it cheaper.

Use turmeric (curcuma).
