The chains I purchased for my tires have a side cam locking mechanism for the outside of the wheel to help bring in the slack. I am having some trouble securing this cam, any advice?

i worked for the state of nebraska department of roads until october. we had to put chains on motor graders. now that's a *****. when we had a lot of trouble we'd (obviously) drive forward or backward a few feet until they get into position. if this doesn't work get some really stiff wire and rig em up. drive about a half mile and try to lock em in again. if that doesn't work, get some new chains cuz yours are the wrong size.
also if your chains will be on for quite a while, it's best to back up your locks with wire. a lot of times your locks will break, a section of the chains will come loose and they'll damage your vehicle or someone elses. good luck

Make sure all the cams are loose, try to hook the chain on both sides as tight as you can get it with the cams loose, then lock the cams in place this should tighten the chains on the tire.

It helps to put the chains on as well as you can, then drive a few feet to let them get seated on the wheel properly. Perhaps you're using different sizes of chain and tire, I've had to ghetto-rig a large chain on a smaller tire before. Use triangles, and keep trying!

P.S. Jan, it's "piqued." And on some mountain passes during a snowstorm, it's illegal NOT to have chains.

Where do you plan on driving with these chains? I wasn't aware they could be used on public roads. Would like to know more about their use and where they are allowed. Is this like in certain mountainous terrains?
Sorry, I can not answer your question but this really peeked my curiosity.
