I'd second the notion of writing one yourself.
Part of this is because rituals and spells and the like are ways for you to entertain your conscious mind while your subconscious mind makes the magic actually happen. You're basically fooling yourself into an altered state of consciousness. This is why a lot of the time people who have been practicing magic for a good long while don't always use tools and other props. Rituals, formulae, tools--these all train you to recognize and get used to working with magic. After you've had some experience with magic you stop needing the books of correspondences and the 101 material, because you already know what you need, personally, to make the magic work.
The other reason is because in order to make magic effective, you need to understand how it works. This is something you learn as a matter of course throughout your practice. By learning the dynamics of magic itself, and also by figuring out what types of magic work best for you, you gain a greater understanding of the practice. And with this understanding you can fine-tune your efforts so that they're more effective.
Taking a prefabricated spell doesn't really teach you much. It might, in the very beginning, be a good introduction to the basic process of spellcasting. However, putting a spell together yourself teaches you more about it: "I see and I forget. I hear and I remember. I do and I understand".
Rather than asking people for a good protection spell, how about asking for good resources on introductory magic, both books and websites? I'd certainly be willing to answer that one :)

Everyone who has said the best protection spell will be one you create yourself is "right". I would recommend using herbs that are dedicated "protection" herbs, candles that are colors for strength and protection, and taking it from there to come up with your own spell. My teacher had a Wiccan friend who wanted to write a quick protection spell she could chant whenever she felt like she was in danger (like crossing a dark parking lot at night - just to ask the Goddess and God for a little extra courage) and she worked for some time perfecting it, but in the end she had a spell she was completely confident with.
Good luck!

Protection spell (and explanation), designed to be done by someone who doesn't have much supplies or much experience with energy work:
Take a number of votive candles equal to your age, and place them around you in a circle. Light them, starting at the east and moving clockwise around the circle. When they're done, hold your cupped hands about a foot to a foot and a half above the first candle, so you can feel its warmth but you're in no danger of being burned or smothering it. Move your hands to the next candle. Continue around the circle.
When you get back to the first candle, push it about a foot farther out from the center of the circle. Do this to each candle in turn, so you have a larger circle. Warm your hands over each candle again.
Then push them out again, one at a time, and then warm your hands on them each for a final time. When you're done, go to the center of the circle, and spin around clockwise three times. If you can, visualize the warmth of the candles filling you, and the spinning creating a "tornado" of warm energy surrounding you.
After spinning , go back to the first candle. Whisper over it, "Fire warm me, fire protect me, fire burn whatever would harm me." Blow out the candle, and then blow the smoke away from the circle. Go to the next candle & repeat until done.
The person doing the protection rite doesn't need to understand the connection between "self" and the fire that's made by using candles equalling their age; they don't need to be consciously aware of the symbolism of starting with a small protective circle and expanding it--that's done physically, on a level that their deep subconscious will recognize and connect with even if they have no understanding of the magickal theories behind the actions.
The idea that fire will protect by burning anyone who gets too close doesn't need explaining: it's built into the physical reality of fire. But by having hir warm the hands over the fire, it also brings the awareness that fire can help without harming, that it can be soothing as well as destructive. The whispered words at the end reinforce this idea--that the fire is *selectively* dangerous, that it warms & protects some and damages others.
Triple-reinforcement is a symbol understood by people who don't do magic; triple-stitching is extra strong; triple-checking one's work is extra careful; triple-washing is a way to get things extra clean. Even without awareness, doing something three times resonates with the psyche as "I've done this REALLY REALLY SOLIDLY." Spinning clockwise & moving clockwise works with the energy patterns established by hundreds of years of magical activities; those are part of the magical egregore almost all Americans can tap into, even if they're not aware of it.

This isn't exactly a spell, it's more like intent.
In a meditative state, imagine there's a mirrored egg around you. This special mirror lets through anything of the love and light. Anything which is NOT of love and light is reflected by the mirror back to the sender...but first it is transmuted to love. (otherwise you are no better than the sender). Alternately, you can accept all energy send to you and let the mirror transmute it before it comes to you.
When you take your shower every day, imagine that the water is also washing off any negative energy you may have come into contact with or generated since your last shower, washing it down the drain so Mother Earth can recycle it.

I agree with the folks on here who said that the greatest magical protection against something is self-confidence. However, there are ways to develop ritual (and behaviors) to generate that self-confidence. I suggest you consider organizing a ritual that involves a limited exposure to whatever it is that you feel is threatening you. By confronting your fears within a ritual space, you'll be able to deal with your issue after gathering all of your inner resources to fight it. Do whatever you do to cast your circle and ward your ritual space - do anything you can to put yourself at ease first - but the best thing you can possibly do is see your fears as they are, and then let go of them.
All the best,
Laz

The best 'protection spell' is that you truly believe that you will not be harmed.... everything else (the herbs, the tools, the words, the garments) are only there to remind you of what you are doing and to help you focus.
Magic is the power of belief
Belief is the power of magic
Power is the belief in magic or the magic of belief

BATH FOR PROTECTION AND PURIFICATION
Steep a teaspoon of basil in a cup of boiling water, and strain out the herb. Add it to you bath water for a protective and cleansing influence. It is particularly useful to clean off the feelings left by contact with those who are negative or controlling.
While soaking in this bath, repeat to yourself, this PROTECTION CHANT
"Trice around the circle's bound
Sink all evil into the ground
Say it three times and end with, So Mote It Be!"

if you are wiccan, you should know better. the best protection spell you can use comes from within yourself. it's not made up of words, motions, elixers, or anything of the like. it's unwavering faith in what you are doing, and dedication to your intent. if you are faithful and dedicated, you will have your protection.

Use salt to make a circle around you. Light five candles around the circle...some kind of blessed candles (you can just use catholic beeswax candles they work fine). Pray to the great spirit for protection and focus your energy on being safe...let this feeling of security take you over and remember it. Then ask that you be allowed to keep this feeling with you always.

Yeah, what the guy above me said ^
And I'd add to study your list of correspondences to use the items that work well for you and practice on the basics of grounding, centering and shielding.
