Actually Satanist do not see Satan in the Christians sense of Satan. Satanism is defined religously by the following tenaments:
Satanism is a term encompassing many different religious and philosophical paths which have among them certain commonalities, being:
Admiration of Satan (prior the fall) as a (non-Biblical) life-positive rolemodel
Belief in the supremecy of the here-now life
Belief in the autonomy and, in turn, responsibility of each human being
Seeking of continual self-improvement and self-fulfillment
Exaltment of knowledge and wisdom as a means to those ends.
Two additional points which are widely shared but not universal among the Satanic paths:
Belief that mankind is an animal and not innately superior to nor more special than any other animal
Belief in the reality and efficacy of magick and/or prayer
Satanism is an aethist philosophical movement. As Atehists they don't believe that a personal god or a personal Christian Satan exists. Satan is used as metaphor for Self, particularly the self-indulgent Self.
GWHIZ I see many real answers here, just because they are not what you want them to be or say does not mean they aren't real answers. Like any religion or movement the WHY people belong to it has to do with what they believe or disbelieve, feel or don't feel........People that have answered what Satanism is and believes are answering the question (this is why they belong), just because it is not the dark negative image you and obviously the asker and a few others had of Satanists, and not what you thought they would say or think, does not mean they did not answer the question honestly and sincerely.
PS I am not a Satanist but it is a philosophical and religious movement that I studied in college right along side of other philosophical and religious movements.

In the big picture of things....there are two major forms of energy. Positive and Negative.
People who choose to name the universal energies as deities have that right.
Not everyone believes in the imaginary Satan.
Not everyone believes that Jesus is God.
Not everyone believes in destruction.

I was raised as a Catholic, and for years I felt tormented by my guilt for my sins. I wasn't a very good Catholic, and hated myself for sinning against god. I left the Church and became a wondering Agnostic. A friend of mine gave me the Satanic Bible as a gag gift. I read it and it awakened dormant feelings inside of myself about my religious upbringing. I wasn't an evil person for things like lust, or masturbation. I was a good person because I cared about the well being of others. I then understood the hidden feelings I had towards the Church and God, that I hated the guilt laid upon me, and didn't really love god at all. In fact I hated god, and was finally courageous enough to voice this feeling.
It was liberating, like being set free. Guilt is like a bag full of bricks, all you have to do is set it down. That line was spoken by the Devil in the movie "Devils Advocate". It's true though, and for the first time in my life, my life meant something to me. Sometimes I think that there are millions of people who are like I was, tormenting themselves and secretly hating god for it. I keep hoping that some of these people will at least try and contact me so tha I can help them set down that bag of bricks.
HAIL SATAN!!!!

Sometimes it's for show, Dadaism, or performance art. Most of the time it's for attention. Nerds who want to feel "powerful." It's the same people who memorize every line in every movie or television show they've ever seen. Ever see that episode of "King of the Hill," where Bobby hangs out with a bunch of 30-year-old "Satanic" dorks who work at the video store? "Resplendid!" episode. Oh... wait...

Negative. The christians are the only ones who acknowledge the existence of the christian devil/satan.
Satanism is actually the worship of yourself, not an item or someone who died a long time ago. it's the indulgence of human nature ans accepting everything that life has to offer without the help of an invisible diety. We don't thrive on the idea of abstinence because that is what makes life boring.
However, we're not bad people either. Just because someone doesn't share the same beliefs with us, doesn't mean we have to automatically be discriminated against.
If you read up on Satanism and it's real meaning, you would understand why I because Satanist. If you don't want to read up on it, that's okay too. I won't make you. I won't even provide a link.
Hail Satan.

I believe that the concept of the Devil represents an affirmation of life and independence. When you examine YHVH and find a god who changes a covenant from a simple code of 10 basic ethical commandments to 613 laws dealing with every aspect of life, who ravages your civilization using local thugs (read King Nebuchadnezzar) when you go against his will with all the logic of an abusive spouse (you made me give you that black eye), and then discards you in favor of better, more powerful people while casting you as the killers of his anointed - anyone who rebels against that is a symbol of free will, of rebellion against tyranny, and liberty for the mind and soul.
Believing in that principle doesn't require one to accept Biblical propaganda as truth. It only requires one to recognize that the type of religion and the model of deity presented in the Bible are antithetical to human development.
And I honor the devil because he doesn't demand my subservience, instead choosing to inspire my respect.
Hail Satan,
Lazarus
