this is an ongoing argument between myself and my dad. He says that if you pass gas in public that you should ignore it and so should anyone that was around to hear it. I say that you should say excuse me. What do you say?

Farting used to be done rather proudly in public, but lately in these overly neurotic times, there's a farting etiquette that's now expected. See a couple of examples, which contradict each other, links below. One says to apologize profusely, the other to ignore it, or give the dog dirty looks. I think it should be handled in the same manner as sneezing in public. It's clearly an offense of other peoples' space, so if you're obviously the offender and it was rather loud, an "excuse me" should probably suffice, a public confession of the crime. Otherwise say nothing.

ignore it and they should, too. passing gas no matter how much of an accident is rude but acknowledging points the rude finger right at you. if noone knows it was you but only suspects then you are not 100% rude. Plus, if noone hears it or smells it, are you still going to go to everyone and say, "excuse me." "For what," they say. And you reply, "Oh, I farted. Didn't you hear it or can't you smell it?" also, if there is a chubby person nearby, relax everyone I'm chubby, then everyone will think its them. Everyone always blames the chubsters for the farts, bastards.

well it depends what gas if ur talking about burping i know its bad etiquette but i just let theat out loud even if its small or big and i got into a habit without saying excuse me :| i know i shouldnt do that and my dad gets really mad at me but my mom thinks its funny but the other gas i would be embarassed i would probably just make up an excuse about that or something.

haha! I personally would ignore it and act like I didn't even hear it, therefor it wouldn't look like I had done it. Now if you are cramped in a small room with 20 other people and let one rip, which sounds like a freight train coming through the building, and it leaves and green cloud! Then yes I would say excuse me...(and I would probably never leave the house again. lol)....other than that I wouldn't claim it.....lol....sorry I am a typical southern redneck girl....and that's what I would do!

seriously, get him some bean-o and sneak it in his food, it works on husband's, dog's and dad's....and even prissy daughters!!
When it used to happen with hubby silent deadly killer, we would say oops, and rush to the next row in the store.
once a woman gave him the nastiest look!!! i mean disguesting!

and i've said "oh my" i hope that wasn't a wet one!!!
or "honey, do we need to find you the bathroom again????
or Lactose Intollerant eh?
just let him be, he's your dad, and you say excuse me and you both or covered, or just look around and say./...whew--- dang dad that one stinks worse than yours!!!!
this is all in good fun!
excess gas is no fun and cannot be helped,
but there are things like gas-x, and bean-o to help
just be glad he doesn't need diapers yet!!!

I would say "excuse me" only if I was aware that people heard/smelled it. However if they do not notice, no harm done. We al pass gas it is a natural occurence :)

It is assumed that if you fart out loud in public that you were not in control of it or you would not have done it. Everyone should say nothing.
You should only excuse your self for something that you have control of. ie: accidently jostling someone.
